AEPH [Close2Death/Modulate/Flight/Subsonik Sound/Bad Taste]

Simone Vallecorsa aka Aeph was introduced to Drum and Bass when he was a teenager back in Rome. At the age of 16, inspired by people like Bad Company, Dillinja, Ltj Bukem and new wave acts like Pendulum, Sub Focus, Noisia and Spor, Simone was compelled to make his own music. Now ten years down the line Aeph lives and works out of London and has released on a number of DnB's most cutting edge labels. The "Aeph" sound is a mixture of early musical influences such as Daft Punk and Prodigy, ultra modern riffs, and great versatility. Combined with a finesse that rivals his role models. "Aeph is on path for greatness! Mind blowing tunes, super tight production and he is even a nice guy! Putting more BAD into Bad Taste..." Blokhe4d.

Straight after he signed "Slick Down" on Mayhem's label Aesthetics, based in Atlanta (US), and "Crawler / Weirdraws" on the notorious dutch label Citrus, receiving massive dj support all around the world. For 2010 are forthcoming many releases on labels like Cyanide, Full Force, Disturbed, Sinuous to name a few. Among them some collabo's and remixes with the likes of Bulletproof, Mayhem, Cern, Muffler, Future Signal and more to come.

Interview: Sweet Headache feat. Q BiK

source

Q-BiK is proof that good Drum&Bass sounds do not only come from the UK, but also from down under. Q-BiK is originally from New Zealand, lives in Perth (Australia) and is DJing around the world. If you have been listening to last week’s mix, you might already be familiar with his smashing track “My House”.

I got the chance to do an interview with him to talk about the Drum&Bass scene in Australia and New Zealand, his connections to other artists and his plans for 2011. But first of all, here is a mix by Q-BiK so that you can see what his sound is about:

Q-Bik – Waxworks Mini Mix by Waxworks Music on Mixcloud

Marvis: “In an older interview with you from 2010, I read that you were looking forward to the “holy pilgrimage to Britain and Europe”. Looking back at that, what would you tell about your experiences in Europe? Did you notice any differences to Australia or New Zealand (NZ)?”

Q-BiK: “It was an amazing privilege getting a chance to tour the UK and Europe as well as the US, Canada and South America this year gone. Europe and UK were amazing parties and a breath of fresh air for me as an artist. Getting a chance to play some of the biggest parties across the world has been eye opening and inspirational. Europe was awesome as a whole including the sightseeing and history. I got to play in some really interesting venues too! A nuclear bomb shelter in Slovakia was pretty up there.”

Marvis: “As Sweet Headache has readers around the world, it would be interesting to learn a bit about the scene in Australia and NZ in general. Could you give a quick overview on that? How big is Drum&Bass there in general?”

Q-BiK: “Australia and NZ have very good DnB scenes nationally. NZ is a smaller country and DnB has caught on quicker and been taken more mainstream with artists like Concord Dawn, SoM, Upbeats, BulletProof etc, having lots of national exposure. Australia is catching up fast. Artists such as ShockOne, Phetsta, Greg Packer, and myself have been able to penetrate more mainstream radio as DnB become more widely accepted. Perth is definetly the epicenter for DnB in Australia with parties ranging from 200-2000 people clubs shows and 5000+ at festivals.”

Marvis: “On your MySpace page, you list Basswerk as one of the labels that you released on. As Basswerk is based on Cologne and I happen to live there, too, I would like to learn a bit about your relationship to them. How did you get in touch with Basswerk?”

Q-BiK: “I got to know Heiner, the owner of Basswerk by AIM. We chatted for a bit as I always wanted to do a remix of one of my all time favorite tunes, ‘Damn Wire’ by Heiner aka The Green Man. Unfortunately at the time, someone else had just done one, but he asked about any music I might have floating about. I sent him one of my early 1st tunes. He loved it and asked to put it on his Basswerk CD compilation. Such a great way to sign one of my 1st early tunes. Hopefully I’ll get to update the ‘Damn Wire’ – Q-BiK style.”

Marvis: “You are cooperating with Seeka MC quite a bit. How did you two get to know each other?”

Q-BiK: “We first met back in 03/04 in NZ. He had moved over to NZ for a short time and asked around the local record shop who the DnB people were in Hamilton, NZ. At the time, I was promoting parties and DJing. We caught up and got on very well and instantly. There was chemistry on the decks and mic. This quickly saw us touring NZ and playing festivals. Now we are also working together in the studio. We will definitely be doing more releases together as time goes on as well as a lil something fresh on stage. Watch This Space!”

Marvis: “I read that you are calling your style ‘Future Soul’. How would you describe your style in comparison to other DnB DJs? What makes your sound special?”

Q-BiK: “I play drum and bass! I don’t pigeon hole myself to one style of flavor. Future Soul for me is quite a broad term, but to me encompasses the soulful side and the forward thinking dance floor side as well. Its got an element of funk or soul but solid, heavy beats and basslines and great production quality.”

Marvis: “Could you tell me a bit about your plans for 2011? What are you hoping to achieve this year?”

Q-BiK: “This year is about music! Sign to one of the bigger labels in DnB. They seem harder and harder to get these days with everything going digi. I also would like to play more festivals in Australia and abroad as well as continue to tour the world and push my sound and style.”

Big!!

*Knowledge Seba Remix Competition*

Swedish producer Seba (Sebastian Ahrenberg) has established a reputation as one of the finest purveyors of quality drum & bass over a distinguished career stretching back over 15 years. From his early tracks on LTJ Bukem’s ground-breaking label Good Looking Records to his more recent work across iconic labels such as Metalheadz, Soul:r and Hospital, Seba's music has retained a timeless appeal and brings together beats and bass in classic yet inimitable style.

Seba, Ableton, SoundCloud and Knowledge Magazine have joined forces for an exclusive remix competition of Seba's Painted "Sky"track, which came out on his own Secret Operations label in 2010.

"I would like to hear something new coming out of this track, but still keeping the same vibe. Keep it musical. It doesn't matter if it's heavy or dark or uplifting. The original track is quite musical, so I'd expect any remix of it to be the same."

The winning remix will receive Ableton Suite 8 (download) and a SoundCloud Pro Plus account, second place will win Ableton Live 8 (download) and a SoundCloud Lite account and the third runner-up takes home Ableton Live Intro (download) and a SoundCloud Lite account.

Deadline for entries is midnight on Sunday March 27th 2011.

New Release on Futurebound's imprint Viper Recordings : Smooth - Feel So Free / Music Takes Me Higher

source

Smooth - Feel So Free / Music Takes Me Higher

Hot on the heels of the huge ‘Pulse Of Time EP’ by Camo & Krooked (featuring radio smash ‘Nothing Is Older Than Yesterday’) comes the new single from Viper Recordings newest exclusive signing, 25 year old Slovenian uber-producer Smooth.

Having been amongst the first to champion and put out early releases by artists such as DC Breaks, ShockOne, Sigma, Camo & Krooked and Brookes Brothers, Viper Recordings is undoubtedly the home of the freshest new artists in Drum and Bass. When Viper gets behind a new artist, people listen, and Smooth (alongside other Viper new boys Metrik, Furlonge and Genetic Bros) represents the new breed of young talent set to follow previous Viper alumni into the hearts of DnB fans around the world.

When Futurebound started Viper Recordings it was with the aim of shaping a label which was the perfect marriage between dancefloor and headphone pleasure, to put out records which blew up the dance while maintaining the musicality which had been squeezed out by the production-by-numbers soulless tech which often threatens to dominate DnB.

No-one exemplifies this more than Smooth, who in less than 12 months has gone from bedroom beat-making to nailing remixes for the likes of John B and Matrix & Futurebound (his 2011 take on the classic ‘Strength 2 Strength’ will feature on the duos upcoming Worldwide 001 mix album) as well as gaining the support of some of the biggest names in DnB, including Pendulum who featured two of his tracks in their recent Radio 1 Essential Mix. Now with an exclusive deal with Viper under his belt, this single gives a mouthwatering sample of what is going to come in 2011 from one the world’s hottest new production talents.

DJ Support for this single from: Loadstar, Pendulum, Brookes Brothers, High Contrast, Danny Byrd, Matrix & Futurebound, TC, ShockOne, Phetsta and more…

‘Feel So Free’
‘Feel So Free’ is peak set dancefloor euphoria at its very best. For the intro, atmospherics eventually drop away to silence, which is then broken as a disco vocal filters in before a 16 bar bass drum build rolls in, guaranteeing every hand in the air before the drop. Electro base and intricately layered synths and trance arpeggios then weave in and out of the vocal before a second rush inducing breakdown sends the dance into a frenzy. ‘Feel So Free’ is a production masterclass which will get many big name producers wondering how Smooth got so good, so quick.

Smooth - Feel So Free by ViperRecordings
Smooth - Feel So Free by ViperRecordings

‘Music Takes Me Higher’
Toughening things up, ‘Music Takes Me Higher’ opens up with rapid-fire double snare drum breaks and speeded up vocals, with distant echoes of the DJ Vibes classic ‘Obsession’. The track then drops with an almighty smash as cascading robotic buzz basslines collide with titanium tough electro drums layered over the continuation of the rolling snare break. This is an absolute dancefloor tearer which plays to the hearts and minds of those who still retain a love for the old school intoxication and exhilaration of the early days of rave.

‘Micro’
Moving on to third track ‘Micro’ (available as a digital only exclusive) you can see the genesis of what is sure to become Smooth’s signature sound – old school breaks, frighteningly tough 2011 production, with euphoric clipped and filtered vocals over mix down perfect bass. ‘Micro’ takes this winning formula off into new directions with future funk warm bass underpinning robo-jazz melodies all rolled together with house style short sampled vocal clips and deeply buried reverbed synths.

Edward Oberon mentioned in KMag interview with Liquid DnB Music and his release on this imprint is out today!!!

Pick up the :: Stunna & Edward Oberon's Lookin' Back and Stunna & Pipeline's Resistance ::
Out Today!!!

View Interview or read it below

LDNB Music is a new liquid drum & bass label launching this month from the people behind the LiquidDNB.com site. We spoke to label owners Forshay and 1981 to get the lowdown.

Please introduce yourself...
I'm Barrie Adams, aka Forshay, I work in web and search engine marketing and run the site LiquidDNB.com and label with Euan, aka 1981. We're both originally from Essex but now based in north London. We both produce dnb with a third member under the name BrokenDrum.

Why have you set the label up?
For a few reasons, mainly out of pure love for the music but also because of the amount of quality music out there unsigned and gathering dust. This made us think we should do something about it and tackle the challenge of running a label. We believe the demand is there for good vibing drum & bass and being in a position with the website and radio show (we play a weekly show on www.Bassdrive.com, Saturdays at 3-5pm GMT) to engage our audience, the label gives us the platform to get this music heard.

What's the ethos behind the label?
Our main aim is to push liquid drum & bass to a wider listening public, we honestly feel this is the best sound dnb has to offer and should be appreciated by more people, so we'll not only target the existing dnb scene, but reach out to people who might just fall in love with it.

Is it a digital label or will you release vinyl too?
We're mainly going to release digitally as we feel this is the format which most people really use, although if the demand is there for a vinyl run and people want it, then why not. We've been hearing a lot about people wanting the Muwookie EP on vinyl so would like to hear from anyone that would want this. Facebook or Twitter is a great way to get your message across.

Can you tell us more about your key artists?
We've signed over 13 artists who are either new to the circuit or have made a name for themselves within the liquid scene. Our first release features Stunna and Edward Oberon who are both top pedigree producers and coming next will be a four track EP by amazing new talent Muwookie.

Are you looking for more artists and if so where should producers send demos?
Yes, we're always scouting for new music and artists for releases, if it's good and suits what we play on our radio shows then people should send it in. The best way to get tracks to us is on AIM (LDNBmusic) or email (demo@LDNBmusic.com).

Tell us more about your first release...
Up first is Stunna & Edward Oberon's Lookin' Back and Stunna & Pipeline's Resistance. Both Stunna and Edward Oberon have been producing amazing music for years, we are delighted to have them on board. Both tunes have deep liquid vibes but also maintain that dancefloor edge and have been receiving heavy play support within the scene. This will be released on 7th February and will be available to buy from all good digital retailers.

Got any other releases in the pipeline you can tell us about?
So far we have got future releases lined up from Clart, Muwookie, mSdoS, BrokenDrum, Command Strange, Smote, Intelligent Manners, MJT, CJ Styles and Londy who are a great bunch to be working with.

RED LIGHT RECORDS NEW RELEASE OUT NOW!! - ZERO METHOD

source

Out now on RED LIGHT RECORDS is the latest release by ZERO METHOD!!

OPTIV – STRANGEWAYS (ZERO METHOD REMIX)

Audio (click here)

Probably best known for several hefty tech tracks on DSCI4 in recent years, Hungary’s Zero Method has since been steadily refining his sound, and is now ready for a release on Red Light Recordings. Showcasing his interpretive skills with a remix of Strangeways on the A side, ZM has smoothly and subtly polished this early Optiv solo piece in preparation for the rigorous demands of dance floors in 2011. With signature ZM chunky bass beefing up the body of this tune, a false drop and neat edits, here the familiar meets the future.

ZERO METHOD – THE METHOD

Audio (click here)

More proof of Zero Method’s ongoing improvement in production can be found on the flip, where The Method lies in wait to overwhelm your senses with its all pervasive bass. With minimal fills to allow the hypnotic b-line to do its thing, a steppy break stands ‘longside to support the brutally unambiguous message of The Method: shut up and dance, fuckers!

This release is available exclusively now at BEATPORT (click here) for 2 weeks. Afterwards it will be available everywhere else.

Dieselboy - UNLEASHED!
A Shocking New Vision Of Bass Destruction

Dieselboy's mix CDs have turned on generation after generation of heads to the sounds of drum and bass. From “Drum and Bass Selection USA” in 1996 to “Substance D” in 2008, each has become a classic for the genre. Recognized for their solid content, clever aesthetics, imaginative concepts, and intense energy, his CDs have set the bar against which other dj's mix projects are measured. Because he only releases mixes infrequently, these moments are considered a special event.

This is one of those moments.

Dieselboy - Unleashed! is his most layered and nuanced studio mix to date. Returning to his old school mixtape roots where he isn’t limited to what tracks he could use or license, Dieselboy has used the opportunity to take Unleashed! to another level.

56 tracks were used to craft a deep and extensive 73-minute mix that reveals itself only after repeated listens. Steering away from banging out an "of-the-moment" forgettable dancefloor rinseout, Dieselboy throws down a wide variety of current and classic tracks and edits, wrapping up the mix with 25 minutes of finely diced dubstep that showcases his current taste in the genre and forthcoming tracks from his dubstep label, Subhuman. Finally, the project is given a tongue-in-cheek graphic treatment that references the exploitation sci-fi fantasy movie posters of of the 1970s. It looks and sounds hardcore.

Here it is - the mix he considers his best to date...
