Cyber Groove Artist Management in association with B.A.D.A.S.S. RAVES and Theory Present:
What to expect from this mixtape?
Killer mixing, and a dope track selection from the DJ 2RIP with flawless lyrical/vocal ability from Theory.
Origin of Project:
as told by Scott McCusker, owner of Cyber Groove Productions/Artist Management
Dubstep being in the spotlight right now in North America’s EDM scene it has seemed that the role of the MC has diminished. I didn’t take this realization very lightly. Cyber Groove is proud to act as an agency to some of the world’s top MCs in the bass music genre. I am also a huge supporter of the idea of having a MC involved with live bass music events. A MC provides a true show element; it keeps the attendees entertained throughout the entire DJ’s set, so it is a definite win/win situation for all parties involved.
Cyber Groove’s Discovery of Theory
A member of my staff brought a YouTube video to my attention which was a hip hop artist by the name of Theory rhyming over the Skrillex track “First of the Year” (http://youtu.be/UYYF16JwMuw). The Skrillex track alone is a great tune but having Theory on it, WOW. The track sounds as if Skrillex himself hand picked Theory for a remix, but for the record, this track is not an official remix.
Watching this video blew me away, I am a fan of dubstep and hip hop is my first love so to put them together it definitely made a lot of sense, and on top of that the video production on this video is mind blowing. Theory’s timing on the track reminded me of a drum and bass MC so I had to reach out to him to see what other projects we could create for him.
The Pitch
I approached Theory with the idea of releasing a free mixtape to get his sound heard by the masses of the bass music genre. Also as an agency I want to introduce that given a certain style of MCing, the MC can be booked out again onto all of these Dubstep shows around North America like how the MC is utilized on Drum and Bass shows. Theory coming from a Hip Hop/R&B background was at first blown away since the idea was a little foreign to him (Hip Hop/R&B tracks are usually 3 to 5 minutes long); to rhyme over an entire mix of bass music (~30 minutes / primarily dubstep) like how drum and bass mix tapes were done back in the day, but accepted the project immediately.
The DJ
The selection of the DJ to do the mix was a tricky one, geographic location had a lot to do with it and it had to be a Cyber Groove artist, but more importantly skill and popularity had to be there and DJ 2RIP has all of those things. DJ 2RIP when he’s not melting your face is owner of Badass Raves an event production company that spans over many regions (primarily on the east coast) pushing the bass music sound and usually crams in 1200 - 3000 people into his events. I sent the video to 2RIP that Theory did for the Skrillex track and 2RIP was on board after the first verse. DJ 2RIP put together a multi genre mix of Dubstep, Electro, and even some Moombahton, all to test Theory’s ability as a MC, and lets just say, Theory Aced it!
