J MAJIK & WICKAMAN - BEHIND THE MASK EP (INFRARED MUSIC)
J MAJIK & WICKAMAN - BEHIND THE MASK EP (INFRARED MUSIC)
Anyone that knows their D&B will testify to the fact that J majik & Wickaman know how to make a dam good tune! Well if you weren't aware of this, the 'Behind The Mask EP' will tell you all that you need to know.
With an eclectic selection of tunes running through the EP this has a little something for everyone. 'Don't Go' is one of the finest uses of the 'Moby - Porcelain' sample that we have ever encountered, harnessing the majesty of that tune and adding the perfect junglist drum beat to spice it up a bit.
They flip the script a touch with the ominous sounding 'Shift Control', an amalgamation of hard drum beats and evil samples. These two are true flag flyers for the genre, repping it to the fullest with each and every release, and this one is no different.

DJ Mag [Canada] REVIEW: FREAKY FLOW
http://www.djmag.ca/2012/03/06/freaky-flow-a-show-review/
When I heard Freaky Flow was coming to Calgary, I was skeptical to say the least. I feel mean saying this, but I really wasn’t sure Freaky Flow still had relevance in the drum and bass community. It had been years since I had heard anything he had done, and honestly the words “washed up” came to mind. Although this man is pretty much responsible for securing my love for drum and bass, I still was just sort of thinking thoughts of distaste. Well, I will be the first to admit I couldn’t have been more wrong in my blatant dismissal.
To be fair to Freaky Flow, I have to talk him up a little bit after my previous statements of irrelevance. Let me just say that a lot of my friends got into drum and bass because of him. Freaky Flow released a monumental album in the late 90’s. This was back when everyone still bought CD’s. There was no such thing as iTunes, torrent sites, or any of that. I mean, we had Napster, but it was nothing like it is now. It was all scratched skippy CD’s and removable faceplates. Everyone had this album, and when you were rummaging around your friend’s crappy car for something to listen to it was impossible to ignore the black background with the word “Tits” emblazoned across the front cover in giant white letters. And it was a really good album too! I listened to that CD more than any other CD in my teen collection. Along with DJ Czech’s effort in the same Obscene Underground mix series -“Cock”, “Tits” was the catalyst that turned me into a full blown breaks and dnb girl. These albums were instrumental in developing my musical taste, and introduced me to some legendary talent such as EZ Rollers, Aphrodite, and Plump DJ’s.
Not to date myself here, but the times I’m describing were already a decade ago. I honestly thought that Freaky Flow had kind of dropped off the musical planet since then, as I hadn’t really heard of him putting stuff out or touring. A quick check on his Wikipedia page tells me that I was in fact wrong about that as well. His discography shows quite a few newer releases that for whatever reason, I just haven’t heard. And really, his show was great! Everyone was having fun. Of course not all the tracks were pleasing to my musical palette, but I was very happy with the overall track selection. When Freaky Flow dropped his first track of the set, I was kind of worried, because the intro was just bad. It was the kind of vocal drum and bass that personally turns me off. But then the bass dropped and things drastically improved. I also forgot that Freaky Flow is amazing at scratching. He definitely showcased a lot of that throughout the set as well. As long as my eyes didn’t deceive me I am going to wager he played all vinyl, which is a welcome sight in this digital era. There was a really good mixed crowd of younger people and old school junglists, and smiling faces all around.
So what did I learn? As usual, having a negative opinion really does nothing but hinder me. If I wouldn’t have given this show a chance, I wouldn’t have been reacquainted with my first love of drum and bass. I wouldn’t have learned of my misinformation. I wouldn’t have had so much fun! Freaky Flow has once again recruited me as a fan. I will actually watch for his new mixes. Perhaps for old times sake I will burn them onto CD and keep them on the floor of my car- to recreate that authentic teenage feeling. Thanks Audio Empire for the great show!

HIGH MAINTENANCE - DON'T LOSE IT EP [MAINFRAME]
After a year that saw a number of fast paced releases from new co-signings Xilent, High Maintenance and Fourward, the mighty Mainframe continued their relentless string of hits in 2012 with a reworking of Body & Soul and Fourward’s classic ‘Authority’ and ‘Carnage’. Led by DnB veteran and label owner, DisasZt, Mainframe keeps things moving with yet another massive release, this time an explosive EP from rising star, High Maintenance.
Shortly after releasing some tracks in 2009, James Smith, aka High Maintenance quickly found himself featuring on the genre-bending podcasts of electro-lover John B, and soon attracted the attention of label owners and scene veterans Shimon and DisasZt. After co-signing to Audioporn Records and Mainframe Recordings, High Maintenance wasted no time kicking off the next phase of his career with a tremendous remix of Ed Rush and Tali’s ‘Dark Days’ as well as DisasZt’s ‘Try Me Again’, from his ‘Shadow & Lightning’ LP. After the release of his impressive first solo effort ‘With You’ / ‘Nowhere’ on Audioporn Records, and a number high profile remixes including a rework of Camo & Krooked’s ‘Watch It Burn’ and Manufactured Superstars ‘Take Me Over’, High Maintenance continues his relentless climb in electronic dance music with five varied but equally accomplished tracks.
‘By Yourself’ (D&B)
High Maintenance starts off proceedings with the impressive ‘By Yourself’. A thoroughbred drum and bass number, ‘By Yourself’ sees hard-hitting drums combined with female vocals edits and an iconic, screaming bassline. Featuring some of the most outrageous bass this side of 2012, a drumstep section and a healthy dose of adrenaline, the intense ‘By Yourself’ kicks things off in style.
‘Don’t Lose It’ (Drumstep)
Featuring an introduction full of anticipation and atmosphere, ‘Don’t Lose It’ offers no let up. An anthemic drumstep number, High Maintenance mixes iconic vocals with a strong melody and a half time beat that has to be moved to. Boasting heavy bass, hard drums and infectious vocals, ‘Don’t Lose It’ will get the dancefloor packed.
‘Got To Be There’ (D&B)
Featuring an adrenaline fuelled build up, ‘Got To Be There’ launches into a dancefloor weapon. Following in the footsteps of High Maintenance’s own DnB number ‘Nowhere’, ‘Got To Be There’ pushes energy levels to the very limit, with grating bass, relentless rolling drums and catchy vocals throughout. One of the most energetic tracks of 2012, ‘Got To Be There’ is already causing damage across the globe.
‘Stars (feat. Tali)’ (D&B)
Far from a simple drum and bass track, ‘Stars’ fuses the flawless production of High Maintenance with the dynamic vocal delivery customary of ‘The First Lady of Drum and Bass’, Tali. Packing in vocals full of character, a roaring bassline and even a half-time section, the intricate and varied ‘Stars’ is the perfect way to summarize an EP from one of DnB’s rising talents.
‘Turn Around (feat. Susiah)’ (Dubstep)
Another slice of anthemic electronic dance music, the dubstep flavored ‘Turn Around’ showcases High Maintenance’s production talent and comfort at varying tempos. Featuring a soaring female vocal and yet another melodic bassline, ‘Turn Around’ shows another facet to one of the scene’s most multi-talented producers.

6Blocc Hard Talking : LoopMasters
http://www.loopmasters.com/product/details/1205?review_id=1680
6Blocc is back to attack with a terrifying set of hard-edge Dubstep samples. Hard Talking hits you with more than 200 ear-busting bass shots. This new ISR pack offers a complete arsenal of dub sonics to put an end to all low end.
For this heavy stash of Talking Bass and vocal samples, 6Blocc cuts to the heart of his trademark, channeling raw Los Angeles roots that rumble the entire earth.
The legendary DJ and producer debuted on the decks in the mid-80s, and has been registering on the Richter scale ever since. As R.A.W. and B-Boy 3000, he remapped vault lines across hip-hop, jungle, DnB, and hardcore.
When 6Blocc unveiled his signature Dubstep sound in 2007, crowds worldwide synched with the seismic bass that unleashes from the deepest pocket and socks you in the gut without batting an eye.
Now, the 6Blocc shots heard 'round the world are in your hands. Hard Talking contains the energy behind 6Blocc's upcoming and recent releases on Foul Play, Ultra, Terminal Dusk, Moonshine, Mad Decent, and Lo Dubs. The fuel behind his recent collaborations with Cypress Hill producer DJ Muggs and San Fran's Bassnectar. The drive behind 6Blocc's dubstep remixes of Fugees, Dr. Dre, Method Man & Redman, and Bone Thugz n Harmony, out on his own record label 6DUB.
Hard Talking pairs sub-sonic low-end with extra-crispy top bass holds, allowing you to customize your own earthquakes of total obliteration. This dynamic sample pack features the bass shots and vocals in Kontakt 4, as well as a slew of gritty Rex.2 files to rip it up. This pack comes in Acid WAV and Apple Loops so you can drop 'n' rock these 24-bit bass boomers into your own tunes.
For double dub power, Hard Talking makes the perfect addition to 6Blocc's Dubstep Ammo, where you'll find wobble bass sounds, booming drum loops, effects bombs, grinding synth loops and of course rumbling sub bass.
Once again Industrial Strength Samples delivers another solid follow up and studio banger all in one down load !

Sw@t interview on vikingsays.com

DJ Sw@t – Interview & Exclusive Mix
Hailing from the mid-west, DJ Sw@t is a non-stop bass making machine. Since her debut in 2005, Sw@t has played live shows nationwide, has hosted her own radio shows (KrisisDnB, Global Vortex), has her own production company (Hi-Rev) and founded the DNB Girls of Canada Collective. Producing and playing drum and bass, dubstep and a variety of other genres keeps DJ Sw@t busy as hell. I feel lucky to have pinned her down in the hot seat for a VikingSays exclusive interview! This bit is chock-full of previews, mixes and links to the projects DJ Sw@t is pumping out in 2012. Don’t miss this vixen in action!
ScrabbitSays:How did you get into drum and bass?
Sw@t: To be honest, when I first started going to parties I didn’t understand what I was listening to. I was so new to electronic music and had yet to learn which genres were what. All I knew is that this fast paced music with a heavy baseline and banging drums really spoke to me.
SS: How long did you listen to drum and bass before you started spinning? How long after that did you start producing your own tracks?
Sw@t: It must have only been a few months after going to my first rave that I started collecting vinyl. With in 6 months I was playing the opening slots or even just showing up at various weekly nights and asking to play a few here and there. I was eager to play and I wanted to put in my time.
I probably got into production within a couple years after that. I dabbled here and there for a few years but nothing too serious until more recently.
SS: How would you describe the style of drum and bass that you make?
Sw@t: As for the Drum & Bass side of things, I couldn’t really pigeonhole it. I have tunes that are more on the jazzy side to even the grimier or harder style Drum & Bass. It all depends on how I am feeling in that moment.
SS: You also produce other genres of electronic music (melodic electronica, dubstep). Can you tell us how producing one style might influence the other?
Sw@t: It’s interesting to me how I can go out to an all night event and rock some dance floor banging tunes but when I get up in the studio I end up producing some of the most chilled out and melodic tunes. I don’t know that they necessarily influence one another since I am the one in the driver seat and it’s all up to how I am feeling in that moment. Sometimes I’ll think I am going to start making a Drum & Bass track and I decided it has more of a dubstep feel to it and then suddenly that is what I am making. I really never know what sound I am going for when I step into the studio. Sometimes I just get a melody in my head and have to get it out. I don’t always know what direction I will go, but I know it’s going to be something I really enjoy. I guess you can say, the plan is that there is no plan.
SS: Okay I know you don’t answer this one often, but what’s in a name?
Sw@t: When I first started out I didn’t know what alias to have. My friends at the time nick named me, “Dizzle” but it wasn’t really me. Another friend suggested, “SW@T”. He said, “Why don’t you make the name stand for something like, Sexy Woman @ Turntables?” I loved it. Think about it, we all have our favourite, DJs, Bands, singers and various artists. There is something sexy about watching someone rock out to their passion. Let it be on the mic or on the drums so I felt, “Sexy Woman @ Turntables” worked for me.
SS: Tell us about your musical inspirations: DJs, producers, bands?
Sw@t: I am influenced by so many different musical genres and artists. I’m inspired mostly by the way music makes me feel when I listen to it. I could be listening to a live DJ set at some music festival and I imagine myself there feeling the energy of the crowd. Sometimes I am listening to something very melodic that really speaks to my soul and gets me thinking about my life, my relationships. Music motivates me or sometimes it simply makes me feel at peace.
There are numerous artists that continue to inspire me daily. Whenever I look around I see like-minded people working hard, loving what they do and overcoming obstacles every day. Some of the people that have inspired me and I look up to this day are some of the very people I now work with.
Paul aka Inside Info has always been an artist I thought highly of. He produces a sound unlike most Drum & Bass artists out there and I think he was over looked for years. There are so many people out there trying to be like someone else and this guy was just being him. He was making his own unique sound and wanted to help others in the process. I really appreciate that about an artist, that no matter how big or small, they treat everyone equally and respectfully.
Another artist I’ve not only looked up to but ask for advice throughout the years is Freaky Flow. Someone many old school Junglists are very familiar with. He took the time to get to know me, the person and the DJ and continues to give me advice and support throughout the years.
B.Traits to this day is a woman I still look up to. From our first conversation on msn (does anyone still use that?) talking about our dreams. That woman is seriously living them to this day and she is paving the way for other female artists. Her kindness, hard work and support helped me right from the beginning. She is someone that knows what challenges can come early on for eager artists and knows how to overcome those obstacles.
Another woman that inspires me is Vilify from Montreal. I remember my first gig out there, the girl was asking me for advice and telling me how she looked up to me. Within a matter of months speaking with her she had already begun to take over the Dubstep Scene in Montreal and really make something Canada could be proud of. She along with B.Traits and the Drum & Bass Girls of Canada make me so very proud to be a female artist in Canada.
SS: Tell us a little bit about the “DNB Girls of Canada”.
Sw@t: The Drum & Bass Girls of Canada is a collective of talented, hard working women in the Drum & Bass scene. You guessed it, they are also Canadian. It seems that when I started the roster years back most of us still lived out here, but since then many have moved to other countries where their careers have flourished more and more. I am so very proud of our Canadian talent. The reason I initially decided to get this project going was because not only were these woman talented, but also an amazing support team. We help promote one another, support and work together to make something really special. When people ask me the difference between being a female DJ and a male DJ I can only guess that most girls want to work as a team as a lot of the times I notice guys making a competition out of it. Not that there is anything wrong with a little healthy competition. We just have a different approach and it works for us. There may not be as many female DJs as male, but the percentage of success is much higher than men. I think that is because women don’t drop that sort of money on electronics unless they are going to make it work for them. Heh.
SS: What’s it like being a female DJ in a male-dominated scene? Are there any experiences you’ve had that you would say are unique to being a girl on the decks?
Sw@t: Being the odd one out just means you stand out. That doesn’t mean you get a free ride. I think that people that are truly passionate about what they want and work hard to get it will always come out on top regardless of sex, age, colour or religion. I think it’s definitely easier for people to judge the odd ball out, but that just makes it more fun to prove people wrong in the end, right?
As for unique experiences being a girl, I always have to make sure my nails are freshly painted before a gig. There might be a few guys that like a little polish too, but it’s all I could think of ;)
SS: What kind of questions do fans ask you at your shows?
Sw@t: “How did you get into this?”
That is probably the number one question asked. When I was younger I was always throwing parties and being the entertainer. Either I was supplying a CD with my latest favorite hiphop and dance music or I was telling jokes. I always loved dancing too. It really was no surprise to my friends that I would get into this sort of stuff.
To a passerby I guess the idea of a, “DJ” is the new “Rockstar” so they are far more fascinated about everything going on. A lot of the time I meet people that want to get into themselves. They think, “Hell, if she can do it… so can I!” I love that sort of attitude and am willing to answer any questions people may have.
SS: What is a song that you’re embarrassed to admit that you love? (I promise not to tell anyone, except for everyone reading this.)
Sw@t: Wow, that’s a good question. If I get tricked into Karaoke I’ll sing anything by “No Doubt.” The first CD I ever owned was, “Tragic Kingdom – No Doubt” and to this day I still rock out to those tracks.
SS: Tell us about one of the most memorable experiences you’ve had as a DJ.
Sw@t: I’ve experienced some pretty random but cool things throughout the years. I’ve gotten to meet my favourite artists and even work along side some. I’ve even randomly ended up opening for some of my favourite artists unexpectedly at various music festivals when line ups got mixed around.
After a mix up with a stage I was suppose to play but was shutdown early at music festival in Ontario, the promoter tried to make things right in getting me another slot at an even bigger stage that night. I ended up playing on the same stage as Andy C himself. I think he was even still on the stage when I started my set. That was pretty cool and I’ve always wanted to meet him. I like how an unfortunately situation presented an even better one later in the night. I was very grateful to the promoter and the DJ that graciously shared his time slot so I could still get the opportunity to rock my sounds.
SS: What projects do you have going on right now? I heard about a side project (Kaboom?) and some upcoming releases?
Sw@t: We have just finished filming the last scenes for our music video “Bottled” an Inside Info track I am featured in being released on Viper Recordings very soon. I am ecstatic to see how the video turns out and what sort of hype is created with the release. Viper is such a talented family of unique artists I’m honoured to be a part of this project and many more to come.
Sneak Peak of “Bottled” video
More recently a local producer, “Tripwave” had asked me to do some vocal work for his latest track, “Feel It”. The song ended up being signed to “Breakz R Boss” a Digital Canadian Label, which will also come out with some remixes by some of their artists. I believe we’ve got a video coming out for that one too, I”l let you guys know closer to that release date.
Tripwave Feat. SW@T “Feel It”
As for K@_BOOM it is a side project I do with DJ p_a/iCandy a local Winnipeg DJ and VJ. He has taught me the ropes with visual mixing and together we became, “K@_BOOM!” The DJ/VJ DUO playing electro, dubstep, bassline, house, drumstep and pretty much any banging party tunes.
K@_BOOM! DJ/VJ Duo Promo Video
SS: If you were headlining the best party ever and could pick any DJs to play, who would be on the dream lineup?
Sw@t:
Andy C – for most D&B DJs is an all time favourite and a must have on the dream team line up.
B.Traits – I’ve had the privilege of playing alongside her once before and I would love the opportunity to play with her again. Her track selection is stellar.
Craze – The guy is a GOD on the turntables. ‘Nuff said…
Dada Life – I love their tunes, I love their energy and I think they are hilarious… who doesn’t like funny people?
Dirtyphonics – These guys can control a crowd with their energy. I would love to be a part of a show with this guys.
SS: If you were headlining a chess tournament, and could pick any DJs to compete against, who would they be?
Sw@t: Someone with a sense of humour because I don’t know how to play chess! I’ve never played it, so I’d just pretend it was actually checkers but I’d say “check mate” every time I’d make a move.
SS: Thanks for taking a few moments to catch up with VikingSays.com and fill us in on all your news. We look forward to your next release, keep makin’ em like that! – Scrabbit

Total Science interview on FRIEDMYLITTLEBRAIN
Hello Total Science gents. You must travel so much: can you give me a great road story?
TS: Quiff once pleasured a billy goat in El Salvador some years back. To be fair we’ve had such a great time over the years and we could harp on forever but most of it wouldn’t be printable or possibly legal so we’ll just say we definitely tucked in.
DB: How the link up with SPY came about for this Piano Funk tune? (sc below) I heard it recently on Friction’s show on Radio 1, loved it. Was there a common vibe or a riff or… you tell me.
TS: We had been working with Carlos on various track for some time and this was just another of the ideas we came up with. Every tune we do with him evolves differently.
DB: Was it a consideration to make it vocal? Works well without the vocal though love the vocal etc.
TS: We just thought the music needed the vocal element to drive it along and Riya smashed it with what she did as she had on countless other tracks we’d recorded with her so it was just the right course to take .
DB: Considering you’ve been going for so long the possibilities for collabs and remixes must be insane. How do you run it day to day and not go crazy? I mean you must have tunes coming at you all the time now via the internet etc.
TS: We have someone who does the business side of the label now so all we do is each morning go through tunes we had been sent the day before and see which ones are good or not.
DB: Fair enough.
TS: We try to get it done by early afternoon so we can then crack on with tune making or letching over Facebook
DB: I feel that you are consistently underrated, especially when it comes to Liquid Funk and how some people lazily refer to it (ie as simplistically ‘mellow’) I see the style as being really varied, always have: it can be wildly abstract and full on slamming as well. How do you guys perceive the genre in general?
TS: It has been a long road for us but the truth is it’s about doing what we love which is making music and regardless of if anyone else thinks it’s any good or not we just have to keep doing what we do, so it never really gets us down. We’re sure one day someone will catch on and think ‘Fuck, these boys really did make a worthy impact on the scene; they devoted most of their lives to it’.
And to be fair people who know their shit know who and what we’re about.
Also being in it from almost day dot we just see D&B as one. There is a lot of it we like and a lot we don’t like but it is all D&B. We never want to be categorised as artists who just make one style in the genre as those trends and fashions come and go. We see it year in and year out .
DB: What are some tunes you’d nominate of yours as your most fave?
TS: Top faves of ours would include ‘It’s Not Over’, ‘Wots My Code’ (Dubplate Remix) and ‘Squash’ spring to mind but things like ‘Champion Sound’ and ‘Airtight’ we did as the Funky Technicians were tracks that helped us step our profile up, so they’re also very important too.
DB: And what is one tune from the vaults of D&B that to this day floors you?
TS: Fuck, that’s a big one me personally (Quiff) D&B-wise I’ll never forget the feeling I got when I first heard Krust’s ‘Jazznote’, Bukem’s ‘Horizons’, Dillinja ‘The Angels Fell’ and Photek’s ‘Rings Around Saturn’.
For me (Smithy) pretty much the same as above but I’d add Rufige Kru ‘Beachdrifta’ because its a tune I can still listen to and get taken away with it! Best D&B intro ever in my eyes.
DB: Back to the label and the internet: considering it’s a global thing, does it translate to revenue?
TS: The whole business and promotion thing has completely changed since we started doing it. It does still translate into revenue but not like it did. You just have to adapt with the times. There is the whole online promoting thing which obviously didn’t exist back when we started. That’s a major thing nowadays. You also have to keep tunes a lot fresher now. Back in the day a tune could be well over a year old and sell well. It helped to build the tune back then.
DB: I’m still thinking about that goat. Any food tips btw?
TS: We’re just a couple of simple men, not culinary connoisseurs. As long as we don’t go hungry we’re good. The kebab shop near Carlos’ house is pretty good, and you can’t beat a good Japanese.
DB: Thanks. Have to get that Squash remix in, and the Redlines…

Techsteppin' with Prolix - Organic Feature
We take a look at techstep with a bit of help from Prolix ahead of his latest single "Saw Head" backed with "Funkhole"... What's it all about then?
Techstep is something of an ambiguous term for me. Despite the reasonably straight forward connotations of it's namesake it means many things to many different people and what it is today certainly is a distant vision from where it started out. It's origins are somewhat vague as a sound and I think it would be a disservice not to attribute it's characteristics in part to early 90's techno, notably Joey Beltram and Kevin Saunderson if for nothing else the widely used Mentasm and Reece samples that originated in their music.
The term techstep is widely attributed to the 1996 album "Techsteppin'" on the Emotif label featuring the likes of Doc Scott, Ed Rush and T Power. The sound itself originally the culmination of the prevalent hardstep sound combined with industrial and techno based samples and sound manipulation. The nature of the beast also fits the description.
If you look at some of techstep's favorite sons; Ed Rush & Optical, Dom & Roland, Photek, Calyx, Teebee, Kemal, you start to see a clear trend. At the height of their careers and in many cases today these guys were and are pushing the boundaries of what can be done with technology and how far equipment can be pushed. It is this characteristic that in some ways defines the sound. With the sub genre's modern context in mind Prolix tells us more...
"Writing this kind music can be a difficult one to tackle because not only is the music part itself important but unfortunately the production side of it can actually be of more importance in some respects.
A well produced average tune sometimes seems to have more chance of getting released. Where as today more ‘vibey’ and less well produced tunes suffer because their mixes don’t stand up to other contemporary production levels. Lots of the old heads/ DJs/ producers have a had a noticeable problem trying to get their production levels up to todays high standard – when back in the day they were making the best tunes of the time and perhaps less importance was placed on the mixdown."
"For the record – im not a fan of the term ‘neuro’ at all!"
When asked about the techstep sound (or neuro/ tech/ rolling as other ways it is often described) Prolix continues regarding his own work;
"In terms of writing approach – I think its kind of essential to make sure the sounds you are using are good from the start. Its very hard to rescue a mix if all the parts aren’t of a good quality to begin with. So i generally have one mind on the final mix of the tune all the way through the writing process.
Sometimes that can be a hinderance on your creativity so you have to make sure you don’t get too side tracked trying to make your tune as wide/ bright/ loud as another tune too early in the writing process, but it is a necessary part of production.
And for the record – im not a fan of the term ‘neuro’ at all!"
Prolix tells us a little more about his own music and his forthcoming single "Sawhead" / "Funkhole" on Klute's Commercial Suicide label.
"I'm mainly into rock music, and although i have some influences from there I don’t use rock samples or anything really. I do use a lot of funk breaks and as many organic samples as i can get hold of – be it from films, soundtracks or sample cds. Youtube is especially helpfull in this respect...
"Saw Head" was actually written on a fairly severe hangover (the name is an adaption of the ‘sore head’ i had that day) – not for the first time that a tune has been written in those circumstances either! I wanted to write a nice roller that could appeal to a few different people in the scene and not just to people into the tech style. It seems to have worked too because its getting quite a bit of play from many different DJs which is good.
"Funkhole" came about from messing about with filters in a new sampler I was using at the time. Again for this tune I wanted to try and have a bit more space in the tune and a ‘less is more’ approach. This is another one which is getting a fair bit of attention from people I wouldn’t expect."
"Saw Head was actually written on a fairly severe hangover"
And his own introduction into maybe what is drum & bass' most technical sub genre?
"I don’t know what it is. Im not sure thats why I got into it in the first place, but thats certainly where its got to now. I started just because i wanted to make music and have control over all the elements, not because i wanted to make the loudest tune in drum & bass!
The production levels have been raised so high by producers in the last few years that you have to keep up or risk being passed by. I think it's that level of competition that has increased the quality and innovative technical skills of many producers around. Drum and bass production can become quite a nerdy topic but i truely feel that it is of such a generally high standard that it is influencing how other genres are produced – just see how many current or ex drum & bass producers are now dominating other scenes."
