★ Biography ★
James Smith, aka High Maintenance, may appear a relative newcomer to the drum and bass world, but he did not need time to catch the attention of some of biggest names in the game. Shortly after releasing some digital tracks in 2009, this producer's producer began to hear his tunes on John B's podcasts; it wasn't long before he was sought after by a number of respected drum and bass labels. In early 2011, High Maintenance opted to sign onto Shimon's AudioPorn Records and DisasZt's Mainframe Recordings, kicking off with a tremendous remix of Ed Rush and Tali's "Dark Days," the lead track from Tali's forthcoming album.
High Maintenance began his ascent into music at the age of thirteen with the guitar. "I'd put on an album and learn it all in an hour." When this became banal, High Maintenance decided to pick up a new instrument: the drums. Soon the fifteen-year-old maverick and his newly formed band began playing events in his hometown of Haywards Heath, England. Writing tracks with the band gave him his first taste of his own musical abilities, but having to compromise on his aural vision proved frustrating. "I just wanted to compose a whole piece by myself without having to rely on other people," he says, "so I started producing."
High Maintenance soon became impressed with the sounds coming out of the electronic music scene, which lead to his first production: a remix of Daft Punk's "Harder Better Faster Stronger." The realization that he could turn his love of music into a career didn't come about until a number of years later though, when he produced a track entitled "Sun Flares" (forthcoming on DisasZt's Mainframe label). "It was the first track that I had produced through active monitor speakers. They definitely changed my life."
Aided by the support of YouTube channels such as SkankandBass and Neurofunkgrid, High Maintenance found that drum and bass DJs and aficionados quickly embraced his energetic and heady tunes. "I like to make loud and rowdy tracks with screamy bass, but that still use nice musical melodies," High Maintenance says. "It gives the music two kinds of emotions."
In spite of the rapidity with which his tunes have been embraced by the drum and bass world, High Maintenance is not content to simply make a big tune and rest on his laurels. Pushing to master all aspects of the music that he loves, he is educating himself in everything from mixing and mastering to live recording of bands to composition.

London-based drum & bass label Commercial Suicide will soon release its first compilation.

The forthcoming compilation sees names both relatively new and familiar names featured, with tracks from newcomers like Optiv and Gridlock compiled alongside efforts from Calibre and Klute himself.

REID SPEED- BLASTOFF
REID SPEED- BLASTOFF by Reid Speed
To all my fans, new and old, this mix is a balance between roots and future.
I got my start in EDM playing Jungle, when Jungle was still a living genre, before it became Drum & Bass and got serious. Bass music has progressed and taking many exciting twists & turns since then, but I've never lost the pure exhilarating joy that comes from thick basslines and rapid-fire beats at 170 + bpm... so please enjoy this mix, one part history lesson, one part crystal ball...

==============
I am proud to present xKore in the mix. This 18-year old from Kent, UK has been making a splash in the scene lately with his continuous flow of ridiculously hard hitting dubstep works. Without a doubt, xKore is one of the hottest new names in dubstep for me and it's my pleasure to showcase his work on my show.
xKore started producing just four years ago, writing progressive trance and house tracks publishing his tracks first to the ears of the NewGrounds community. His music has evolved into a style which blends dubstep, drumstep, electro and drum and bass.
Currently on his first international tour all over the US, xKore has now received play support from big names such as Skream, Benga, Tomba and Dodge & Fuski. His latest release is one of his heaviest to date and the intro track to this mix: it's called "Hello" and is a free download on UKF's channel @ http://j.mp/t9tlDm.
In this mix, xKore brings you 17 of his latest tracks in just over half an hour! Leave your appreciation for xKore in the comments!

TOTAL SCIENCE FEAT STAMINA & VERSE @LIQUID V..THE END CLUB LONDON
NZ Girl Features MC Tali
source
Our favourite: Hot Five Tracks – October
I’m actually SUPER excited about this month’s Hot Five that I’ve made it a Hot Six (we’re only halfway through the month and I’ve already penned this entire post ready for you!!)…
Beyonce - Countdown
OH. MY. GOD. Not only am I IN LOVE with this track but the video has had me permanently plastered to youtube for the past few days. In my opinion, this is Beyonce’s best work yet and doesn’t she look AMAZE pregnant (is she, isn’t she - is it a hoax or not WHATEVER, she looks damn fine!).
MC Tali – Cold Hearted Soul
She hasn’t resided in NZ for almost 10 years and her last (and debut) release was way back in ‘04 so having just gotten to London I was well excited to hear a new album just released from famed kiwi MC Tali (Natalia Sheppard). With my excitement came my equal sadness to hear she was making her way back to NZ at the end of October! Good news for you all back home, bet she’s got some summer gigs up her sleeve…she’s easily one of NZ’s finest musical exports so lap it up and prepare yourself with this delight feat. Amari MC.
P.S. Check out the new album Dark Days High Nights and the acoustic version as well, some fine listening there that could be many a summer soundtrack for you all.
Nicki Minaj – Superbass
I haven’t made short work of the fact I’m not a HUGE Nicki Minaj fan but I’ve sucked up my pride and given in to the cheese and will admit I’m down for a bit of Superbass. That is all.
Wretch 32 – Traktor
Wretch 32 growls over the mic and I hear beats reminiscent of Major Lazor’s Pon de Floor. It’s smooth and so refined. Paving his way through UK hip hop over the last year, his second release Black and White was highly anticipated and well received, he’s been a ‘one to watch’ for 2011.
Lana Del Rey – Kinda Outta Luck
She recently won the Best Newcomer award at the 2011 Q Awards, her debut release Video Game has been HUGE over here but I’m much more inclined to get down to Kinda Outta Luck. She’s like She & Him meets Paloma Faith.
Florence & The Machine - Shake It Out
New album release from Florence on the 31st October in the form of Ceremonials. She’s a coveted nzgirl fave and first release off the album is Shake It Out. Listen. Love.

MC Tali mentioned in Taranaki Daily News, NZ
source
Winchfest hopes to pull in the crowds
New Zealand's newest summer festival is shaping up to be something special and Taranaki residents will only have to step out their back door to experience it.
Winchfest 2012 will take place on Oakura farmland on January 28-29, showcasing top wakeboarders as they compete at the region's only winch park.
The park is designed to pull riders over ramps and rails using a 6.5hp engine, a tyre rim and a length of ski rope.
In conventional wakeboarding a boat is used.
"When you turn the engine on, the rope starts to wind around the rim, pulling you along the pond at the same time," park creator Muzz Symons said.
Complementing on-water action at the festival will be live music and DJs.
Winchfest organiser Jane Symons said she had been overwhelmed with the interest in the event.
"The teams at NZ Wake Park, MIA Wakeboarding and Jet Pilot are all coming and we've got professional rider Brad Smeele coming to ride and MC the winch competition.
"We've also had interest from British and Australian riders who are keen to come and compete as well," she said.
The event has attracted award- winning drum 'n' bass act, MC Tali, who will host on the Saturday.
New Zealand bands Concord Dawn, Katchafire and Cornerstone Roots will also play.
"We've got The Red Eyes from Melbourne who are currently touring Australia with Salmonella Dub, and Tijuana Cartel coming, who are both class acts," Miss Symons said.
Food stalls, graffiti walls, a swimming hole and other sporting demonstrations will add to festival-goers experience.
Saturday will be an R18 day and Sunday would be open for all ages.
"We hope to create a relaxed, Kiwi summer vibe suitable for families on the Sunday," she said.
Organisers have also come up with a tent city where 50 pre- erected tents with air mattresses will be available for hire over the weekend.
"One of our ambitions is to increase the profile of wakeboarding in the region and this is a great opportunity for people to experience world-class wakeboarding up close," Miss Symons said.
The website for the festival is winchfest.co.nz.

Cause4Concern presents Task Horizon & Kryteria!!!! [C4CEVR001]
Cause4Concern Recordings presents:
Task Horizon - Kill The Pain (feat. Pedro Rodrigues) Clip by Cause4Concern Recordings
- Kill The Pain -
‘Epic’ is the only way to describe the extended intro of Kill the Pain, featuring acoustic guitar and an earnest male vocal.
Then, just before two minutes in, things quickly take a nasty turn as choppy breaks splinter into pieces and the bassline ‘reboots’ The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. An aggressive, genre bending, sure fire floor smasher.
Task Horizon & Kryteria – Letting Go (Clip) by Cause4Concern Recordings
- Letting Go -
Teaming up with Kryteria for the flip, a eurphoric, trancey intro leads into a chainsaw reece, setting the scene for the chaotic chiaroscuro to come: beyond the drop sweeping synths and ethereal vocal snippets somehow successfully coalesce with heavily edited breaks and sawing bass, creating a kind of beautiful violence. Subsequently, side effects of Letting Go include spontaneous eruptions of feet on the floor and hands in the air.

Falinox KMAG Interview!!!
source
Hailing all the way from the USA, Lifted Music is proud to present their latest signing - Falinox. Kmag met the man himself and listened to his forthcoming release Drift Out, out on November 7.
Falinox can you tell us a little bit about yourself? What’s your musical background and what got you into music?
I’m 22 years old, from Joliet, Illinois, which is about 40 minutes south of Chicago. I got heavily into music when I was about 13 or 14. I had always been into music but I found it was more suggestive of people around me and therefore had older influences. I definitely started to grow closer to music when I was able to form my own opinions and tastes. I began to play instruments around that age and soon got into digital art and electronic music as well. I also love beer.
When did you first start producing drum & bass?
Drum & bass had been a fascination of mine long before I even knew it was drum & bass. I think the first drum & bass record I heard was Ill Skillz I’ll Be There 4 U the Concord Dawn remix, which is a pretty epic first find. At the time I was a hardcore intelligent dance music fan, a slave to Warp Records, Hefty, Ghostly, etc, so when I heard it I was like, “Woah, this fast paced music...this is my kind of music.” But I first really started trying to produce drum & bass when I was 19.
The sounds on Drift Out are really interesting, futuristic and science fiction in nature; what influences your music in order to create this?
I did the tune quite a while ago. It’s nothing more than an embodiment of where I was in my life at that time. I only really remember working on the intro break, the rim hitting one with soloing synths over it, for an extended period of time. After that, the song took on a life of its own.
Falinox - Drift Out (Lifted Music) by Lifted Music
The track also has an A-typical arrangement, is this a conscious effort to sound fresh or just the way you naturally constructed the tune?
The track just ended up that way. The only real synonymous guideline I’m holding onto from track to track is trying to ensure that the music is progressive. I think that will definitely lead to ‘freshness’. You can almost call the arrangement naive, loosely holding onto the confines of drum and bass and I really like that.
Drift Out is being released on Lifted Music, how does it feel to have the support of such an important label so early on in your drum & bass career?
It’s awesome! So much has happened so fast because of it. The fact that Chris and Jon jumped on my sound early and wanted to get me out there was definitely reassuring. I’ve always been a pretty modest person when it comes to my music. I’ve received an overwhelming amount of support and criticism, which is so great for my growth as an artist.
You reside in America, can you talk about the scene over there for us Brits who are unaware and does your music embody the trends of that scene?
I actually know more about the worldwide drum & bass scene than the American one. Does that make me unpatriotic? I never came up through the American scene or was really actively involved in it. The American drum & bass scene feels remote to me, although it’s opening up more and more as my name is growing. I just happen to network more with people on your side of the pond, where the scene seems to have more weight. Having said that, if we’re looking at the larger picture, the electronic dance music scene has never been better in America. Kids are turning out in force to support their favorites. My music doesn't cater to any amount of American though. I do however try and bring more elements of writing from outside genres, anything to try a new angle and approach dance music with a different light.
What do you have lined up following this release?
I’m working on finishing up many things, for example a release for Liftdub, which is nearly done. Also, I’m talking to a few labels in North America which I’m really excited about; you’ll hear more about those further into their development. I’m working on lots of varying tempos and styles. My fear is that I’ll be pinned down as that drum & bass guy, or a dub step producer. I want people to invest in the whole experience so I’m tailoring songs around that idea.
Any plans for a tour soon or are you playing any events in the near future?
I’m doing a few shows in the USA right now. You can get the dates on my Facebook page. There has been a little talk about doing some European Lifted Sessions. I’m available though, contact my agency.

Gridlok - Insecticide - Project 51 Recordings | VIDEO!!
Artist | Gridlok
Genre | Drum & Bass
Release Date | November 25, 2011
Formats | 12" and Digital
Catalogue | P51UK-24

America's number one drum & bass producer is about to hit the streets again with a solo outing on his own label: Project 51. Ryan Powell aka Gridlok is no new comer to the game! After releasing his 1st single over a decade ago he has appeared on all the top labels such as Ram Records, C.I.A, Playaz, Renegade Hardware, and Violence Recordings. Not only that but throughout the years he has gained support from some of the worlds finest DJ's such as Andy C, Hype, Marky, Friction, and many more! Now we turn the pages as USA'S number one is back with two stinking tunes worthy of a rewind.
Starting off the proceedings Insecticide gets the ball rolling. With mysterious vibes, twisted soundscapes, and not forgetting those swarms of killer bees stinging at your ear drums, all before that heavy kick and snare starts piercing those speak boxes. The intro gets the blood pumping and then that dirty sub bass-line kicks you below the waist line. Hard beats and thumping bass is key on this number and will destroy any dance floor known to man! Do not miss out on this soon to be top shelf classic for many years to come as the man like Gridlok never fails to disappoint. (words by DJ Silver)

October was a beast...get thankful for November: parties to look out for!
October was one of the best party months to date with a holiday attached (minus that random snow/ice/rain/hail???? storm that rolled through the Saturday before Halloween)...but that didn't dampen anyone's spirits. If anything, I think the partygoers were even MORE determined to show off their disguises!
Darkroom was a blast with 6BLOCC in rotation with the residents & the attendees didn't disappoint with the costumes! The party raged proper till 4am and all revelers left very happy.
The next big party of the weekend was a rave, also at Public Assembly, "Afraid Of The Dark", was a big affair with two rooms of DJs, exotic dancers in costumes, laser light shows and a long, long line. I was stationed in the second room all night with drum & bass favorites Dara, DB, Empress, Jon S, Odi & headliner Capital J from Toronto, Canada. The energy was pumping all night with hardly a break to breathe & sweaty as all hell. Good Times!!
The beginning of November looks promising too with NERO at Webster Hall this Friday, best known for the their dubstep single "You and Me" with a HUGE stadium-like feel to it. Other notable parties this month include an all-ladies night at National Underground for One Love, a drum & bass weekly by Ninex. Featuring some of the best local female djs (including yours truly), this night should be a fun one...and since it's on a Thursday, which is really practically a Friday these days, you should definitely go check it out!

Fourward - The Healer by Mainframe Recordings
‘The Healer’
‘The Healer’ takes things to a more chilled out plane. Ethereal synths swirl around precise percussion and delicate keys whilst airy vocals add a greater sense of wonder to an already mystifying intro. When the track finally drops, a brazen low bassline bulldozes all that comes before it. Boasting huge bass backed up with honey like synths and hard-hitting drums, ‘The Healer’ highlights the synergy of styles that make Fourward so unique.

MC Tali in Time Out Tokyo!!!!
Nice little write up for her gig in Tokyo ;)
Figured I would share it... source
Looking to bring her back to North America in early 2012...let me know!
It isn't often that an MC gets top billing at a drum 'n' bass night, but when you're talking about the leading lady of microphone wielders, exceptions can be made. Plucked from obscurity by Roni Size, Kiwi singer Natalia 'Tali' Sheppard has gone on to become the preeminent female MC in a genre that's traditionally dominated by blokes. Sophomore LP Dark Days, High Nights finds her flexing her songwriterly muscles, with a bonus CD featuring live acoustic versions of seven tracks from the main album. She appears alongside fellow AudioPorn Records artist Xilent, with support from DJ Aki and the rest of the 06S posse.
