Jade - The Venom Remix EP [Eatbrain]
As one of the figures that helped define the neurofunk sound, Jade needs no introduction. Drawing from a wide range of influences including Konflict, The Prodigy and The Crystal Method, the Hungarian producer has been producing hit after hit for the last eleven years, with his very first release being snapped up by none other than Black Sun Empire.
A veteran in his field, Jade has become an integral part of the neurofunk scene, and has been remixed by heavyweights such as Phace, Audio, and Icicle. With huge collaborations with Black Sun Empire, an infamous bootleg of Dick Dale – ‘Misirlou’ (aka “The Pulp Fiction theme”), as well as his own highly acclaimed album on Citrus Recordings behind him, Jade has now focused his talents to his own label – Eatbrain.
Originally set up as an outlet for his own work as well as that of his close friends, Eatbrain is now set to become one of neurofunk’s most daring labels. With its first release featuring Jade & State of Mind’s ‘Here We Go’ and ‘Audio Hypnosis’ from Jade himself on the flip, this budding label has forced people to take notice from the very beginning.
The Venom Remix EP follows things up in a big way and can be seen as a statement of intent, with four tracks from Jade’s very own Venom LP getting high profile remixes from some of the neurofunk scenes most prestigious names. With a back catalogue already boasting Jade, Black Sun Empire, Fourward and Mindscape among others by only its third release, Eatbrain is a label with big plans – and big sounds to match.
Jade feat. Rymetyme - Venom (Mindscape remix) [EATBRAIN002-A] by eatbrain
‘Venom (Mindscape Remix)’
The title track of Jade’s own Venom LP, the original remains as one of the most energetic, unique Neurofunk tracks around. This remix comes from Mindscape, another veteran of his field and bears all the hallmarks of another great production. Keeping the catchy MC work of Ryme Tyme that made the original so infectious, Mindscape adds a mean bassline that is sure to drive everyone on to the dancefloor. Boasting the moody vocals of Ryme Tyme along with complex percussion and an ever-shifting bassline, this is an energetic spin on a classic.
Jade & Mindscape - Banshee (Dose remix) [EATBRAIN002-B] by eatbrain
‘Banshee (Dose Remix)’
Originally a tour de force by two Hungarian heavyweights in the game, this track by Jade and Mindscape gets a reworking by Dose. Originally from New Zealand, this Londoner was first discovered by Cause4Concern’s DJ Optiv, and is now a rising talent in the neurofunk scene. Kicking off with an airy synth and strings that seem to cry of impending doom, Banshee builds up and swiftly turns into a dark, bass laden juggernaut. Combining a slick bassline with hard percussion and a submerged sub bass this is moody Neurofunk at its best, and a true successor to the original.
Jade - No Cure (Black Sun Empire remix) [EATBRAIN003-A] by eatbrain
‘No Cure (Black Sun Empire Remix)’
One of the names synonymous with the darker side of Drum and Bass, this remix comes from the legendary Black Sun Empire. Beginning with a dark ominous atmosphere, this reworking of the Jade classic takes an even darker tone. Featuring a fat bassline, unsettling glitches and choice samples, this track rumbles into life and never lets up. Combining the precise, shadowy sounds of Black Sun Empire with the already dark, gritty nature of the original, ‘No Cure’ is one of the sickest tracks around.
Jade & Matt-U - Moblaw (Fourward remix) [EATBRAIN003-B] by eatbrain
‘Moblaw (Fourward Remix)’
Offering no let up, the EP ends with a huge collaboration with Matt-U brought up to speed by the mighty Fourward. Since forming in 2007, Fourward have had releases on Virus, Nasca and Citrus as well as Blokhe4d’s Bad Taste Recordings imprint. Already a dancefloor favorite in its original guise, this slick remix takes things up a gear, with the Austrian four-piece tinkering with the memorable Reese bassline and adding an extra sense of drive, urgency and depth to an already certified banger.

TiD&B Interview: Matrix & Futurebound
Posted by Lady V 13/07/2011
Fresh from their latest release, ‘Worldwide 001′, we caught up with the formidable Matrix and Futurebound, to find out more about their newest compilation series showcasing the very best from their respective imprints, Viper Recordings and Metro Recordings, including not only their own stellar productions but bangers from the likes of ShockOne, Furlonge and Camo & Krooked. Having notched up their good share of air miles over the past decade with extensive touring schedules taking them across the globe, we also thought who else better to quiz but the duo, on their thoughts about the drum and bass scene worldwide…
TiD&B: Now that ‘Worldwide 001′ has been released, how are you feeling?
M&F: Very tired! We put a lot of effort into the album, as we do with everything. It’s been a long project since we first started working on it back in January and lately we’ve been in promo overdrive doing radio appearances and guest mixes for the likes of BBC Radio 1, as well as gigs all over the UK, Europe and our current North America tour.
TiD&B: Was there a specific reason behind naming the LP series ‘Worldwide’?
M&F: We wanted to do a mix that represented the sounds of drum & bass around the globe as we are always touring all over the UK, Europe, Russia, Japan, Australia, and North America. We also have quite a diverse roster of international artists signed to Viper with ShockOne from Australia, Smooth from Slovenia, GeneticBros from Russia, so we really want to represent not just D&B sounds from the UK but from all points of the globe.
TiD&B: As ‘Worldwide 001′ is a double cd comprising of both a compilation and mix, it must have been a huge project! How long were you working on it and how easy was it to put it all together?
M&F: We started working on it around last January. To be honest, it was quite a difficult process putting the whole thing together. Originally we were going to license a load of tunes from various labels to put in the DJ mix as this was to be the launch of the series, but as the project went on we kept getting held back with all the challenges faced when having to deal with so many different people and labels. Eventually after working on it for a couple of months we got to the point where we realised we had a load of great material from our own labels (Viper Recordings and Metro Recordings) and so we could put the compilation together using about 80% of our own material. Looking back on it, we’re glad this is how it turned out as being able to do this really shows the strength of the labels.
TiD&B: What was your criteria when selecting the tracks featured? As you were both involved in choosing which music to include, were there ever moments when you couldn’t agree on specific tracks?
M&F: We wanted the compilation to represent what it’s like when you come and see us play live in a club or at a big festival – we usually play out back-to-back, so this compilation was done similar to that where different sections were put together by each of us.
We both love many styles that D&B has to offer, whether it be a tearing banger or a deep roller, we love it all! So when A+R’ing the labels we don’t look for one particular sound, we like to look for originality.
TiD&B: Your collaboration spans back to the mid-00s with several single releases as well as the 2007 ‘Universal Truth’ LP, but for those who may be less familiar with your work as a duo, can you tell us more about how you started working together?
M&F: We had both been producing and DJing for years before we linked up. When you’re on the road DJing, you obviously run into many other producers and there is always lots of talk at gigs like, “oh we should get in the studio mate”, but it’s not often that it actually pans out. In our case, we eventually did get in the studio and the result was our first tune together ‘Strength 2 Strength’, which later appeared on our ‘Universal Truth’ album. At the time we thought there was a bit of gap in D&B between the all-out dancefloor bangers and the liquid side, we wanted to bridge the gap between the two and make tunes that had the musicality of some of the liquid side of things, whilst still having enough balls to smash it on the dancefloor.
TiD&B: What’s your working partnership like now?
M&F: Long walks on the beach, candle-lit dinners…and generally a lot of swearing when the bass kicks in.
TiD&B: With the recent LP release, producing your own music, a hectic touring schedule and also running your labels, how do you find time to balance it all – what’s your trick?
M&F: We wish we knew! It is very tough balancing the label duties, working with our roster of artists, touring, spending time with the family, and trying to get in the studio to write our own material. We always set high standards for ourselves and keep striving to take the label to the next level. We are never satisfied with where we are and that hunger to continue to grow is what keeps us going and a big reason why we’ve been successful.
TiD&B: Touching upon Viper Recordings, Worldwide is obviously the latest big thing to come from the label, but what else has been bubbling and what should we be keeping an ear out for?
M&F: We’ve got the first single from ShockOne’s album out at the moment, called ‘Crucify Me’, a collaboration with Phetsta which has been absolutely murdering the festival scene in Australia and clubs all over the world. Then GeneticBros drops his debut single on the label with ‘Everyday Of My Life’ – a real 80s throwback ballad, and Furlonge showcases his first venture into dubstep with a huge track, ‘All I Ever Knew’. We’ve also got our second annual Summer Slammers album coming out soon which will feature some of the label’s biggest hits, as well as a load of new exclusive bangers. Look out for new tunes from Smooth, InsideInfo, Metrik, Moving Fusion, our newest signing Raw Theory, and finally ShockOne’s debut LP, all forthcoming this year. And, if all goes to plan, hopefully the first single from our second Matrix & Futurebound studio album, which we’ll be working on, will be released towards the end of the year as well.
TiD&B: Viper’s also been collaborating with Chibuku in your home city of Liverpool, can you tell us more?
Furturebound: Well I’ve been working with them for some time now and they’re a great outfit to
work with, they don’t mess around with their line-ups. Since September of last year, we’ve been hosting quarterly Viper shows where they give us free reign to showcase the label, with line-ups including a mixture of artists on our roster as well special guests. After all this time, I still get excited to play there, it’s total chaos!
TiD&B: Viper’s played an important role in introducing us to some of the biggest artists in the scene at the moment such as Brookes Brothers and Camo & Krooked, who you’ve been supporting from day dot – for all budding producers interested to join the roster, do you have any advice? What do you specifically look out for in a demo?
Futurebound: As a label, we’ve always been pushing fresh new talent in the scene – this goes back to some of our very early Viper releases by the Brookes Brothers, Sigma, and ShockOne, and in recent years, we’ve had some of the first releases from Camo & Krooked, Delta Heavy, The Prototypes, DC Breaks, as well as with our own camp including Metrik, Furlonge, Smooth and InsideInfo. It’s very important to push new talent coming through the label to keep things fresh and give a new wave of producers a chance to shine.
There’s no magic formula to submitting a demo, but make sure to really work on your mixdowns and beats before sending something. Don’t send a Version 1 which you just started working on because a proper mix down can make all the difference to the listener.
TiD&B: In honour of the Worldwide LP, and also having headlined gigs all over the globe let’s finish by talking about your experiences of the D&B scene worldwide…
Which country has been the most fun to tour?
M&F: Australia & New Zealand are always a good’un, so are Japan & China, but to be honest, it’s always fun when the pair of us are away.
Which country know how to party the hardest?
M&F: The UK hands down. Although the Aussies have a good go!
Can you tell us about a country/city who’s D&B scene you really rate?
M&F: There really is loads of great places that rep the scene well, but outside of the UK we’d say Austria – not just because they have a great club scene for D&B, but also because of the amount of great producers coming from there.
Which country/city would you consider your home away from home?
M&F: Perth in Australia, because they also have both a brilliant club scene and talented producers.

Crawler ft. Presence Known / Music Within ft. Podage, LaMeduza
Demand Records
[DMND004] Optiv & BTK - Crawler b/w Music Within [11th July 2011] by demandrecords
It’s clear to see that the first half of 2011 has been an amazing one for Demand Records. With their first release jumping straight into the Beatport charts at #1, the second seeing Nymfo’s first ever remix and with the ink still drying on the license request for Demand’s third release to appear on the latest compilation CD from UKF, it’s clear that this label has achieved more than most start-ups.
So it’s no real surprise that the fourth outing from the Swiss-owned imprint is something special too. Here we see ex-Cause 4 Concern member and highly accomplished solo producer, Optiv, team up with Renegade Hardware’s BTK to craft two incredible drum & bass tracks with a completely unique feel.
‘Crawler’ features Presence Known on the beats who helps Optiv & BTK to craft a tribal drum-led slice of D&B with expertly placed sound FX and atmospheric touches. This is like a modern twist on the classic Virus sound, flexing delicate and understated beats with winding mid range synths and deep sub-bass. Impeccable!
Backing it up is ‘Music Within’ featuring Podage & LaMeduza. Building slowly and gradually with powerful vocals, once again we’re treated to an education in the art of subtle drum & bass. If you’re looking for rinsed out amens and heavily distorted reese basslines then turn your attentions elsewhere, because this track is as beautiful as it is elegant. It won’t be turning any raves upside down, but that’s not really the point of good music, is it?

Stop Drop Rave Xilent blog post
I liked this feature that the bloggers of Stop Drop Rave posted up about Xilent so figured I would share it up.
Remember promoters out there in North America...let me know when you would want to bring out our boy to the states and providences ;)
Cheers.
Here's the post:::

TWO NEW XILENT REMIXES
When I first heard Xilent’s original Choose Me, I knew he would end up to be one of my favorite producers. His style is so clean and radiant that you can’t help but to feel good when you hear it. His latest two remixes, set to release soon on the Ministry of Sound label, don’t let down at all. These are only previews of what’s to come, but they’ll give you an idea of how smooth this guy really is.
He grew up in Poland (his real name is Eryk Kowalczyk) with musician parents, where he was exposed to many different forms of music. He first tried his hand at producing at 8 years old trying to make a mix of House and Acid Techno, and he eventually got immersed in Trance and heavier soudns from artists like The Crystal Method and The Prodigy. In following years he experimented with other styles like Techno and Breakbeat, where his unique uplifting style was created. But it was Drum & Bass that truly gave him his home, and everything he learned from the other genres poured into this one to make a truly well-rounded DJ.
His first release came in 2009 on Ammunition Recordings - Quality Killer EP with the track Terminal, which was called a “drum and bass anthem” and “one of the biggest tracks of 2009” by journalists. Xilent now lives in Scotland where he studies sound design at a university, and he continues to bring the beats in full force with his new exclusive signing with AudioPorn records and Mainframe Recordings. If you wanna learn more about Xilent, check out his Official Webpage, or follow him on Facebook, Twitter or YouTube.
And check out these sick remixes!

Matrix & Futurebound: Worldwide Sound Killers
Written By: Curtis Moldrich
Two irreplaceable names in the drum and bass world, Matrix and Futurebound have been at the forefront of the scene since the very beginning. From the early days of releasing on legendary labels Metalheadz and Prototype Recordings to the now well established Viper Recordings, Matrix and Futurebounds sub-ethics and new sounds within drum and bass may have changed as the scene developed – but some things remain certain - namely their dedication, love and respect for the scene that has so beautifully set them up as go-to producers.
They’ve recently released new compilation Worldwide 001 through the Viper and Metro imprints - owned by the duo respectively and now fused together to form a powerhouse stable after they were championed as a duo after releasing the American Beauty EP – the new compilation is a gathering of melodic, but heavyweight drum and bass rhythms from some of the world’s finest heads currently doing the rounds. The duo took chunk out of their studio time for a chat on their history, the direction of their own labels and the birth of the new Worldwide compilation series...
You are now known as one of the most enduring duos in the drum and bass scene, but how did you two meet?
FUTUREBOUND: “We’d known each other for some time, and crossed paths at places like Music House (where we used to cut acetates) and playing at the same shows. I think we first hinted at the idea of getting in the studio whilst playing a club in Brussels around 2004 and worked in some studio time later that month. The result was our first single, ‘Strength 2 Strength’ which was very well received from our peer’s in the scene. Shortly after that we got in again and came up with ‘American Beauty’, which obviously blew up in the clubs and had amazing radio support from the likes of Annie Mac & Zane Lowe etc. All of a sudden promoters where booking and billing us together as a duo and that was the start of everything.”
MATRIX: “Yeah, it was really ‘American Beauty’ that set the tone for most of our early stuff together and after that track, we just thought we had a bit of a sound forming so we just ran with it and decided to make an album which turned out to be ‘Universal Truth’.”
What made you work with each other, and why do you think your working relationship is still strong after so many years?
MATRIX: “I think first and foremost we just get on very well and we also have similar taste in music so we’ve always found it very easy to work together both in the studio and as DJ’s.”
Can you explain the story of Viper and Metro and the reasons you decided to start the label(s)?
MATRIX: “Between us both, we’d released our music on a lot of different labels in the scene going back to the mid nineties, such as Moving Shadow, Metalheadz, Virus and Prototype and it was just a natural progression to start our own labels. I started my label Metro in 1997 mainly because I wanted to be able to release my own music and then it just expanded from there. There were quite a few of us from the same part of London making similar stuff at the time, like my brother Optical, Ed Rush, Fierce and Dom & Roland so I ended up signing quite a few tracks from those guys in the early days. I guess we were all trying to combine techno and electronic sounds with breakbeats and that’s where the Metro sound originated.
FUTUREBOUND: “Viper was launched around 2003/2004 and I always had a plan to sign up artists who had their own unique sound and could go the distance of making albums and to help them develop as artists. We currently have the likes of ShockOne, Metrik, Smooth, Furlonge and InsideInfo who have really established themselves in the scene over the last few years. We also have some new guys who we’re bringing through such as GeneticBros, Magical Gravity, Kerupt, Silent Code and Raw theory and these guys are showing great potential.”
Since your last album "Universal Truth" in 2007 you've been remixing some pretty high-profile people including Moby, Justin Timberlake, Ian Carey and Swedish House Mafia to name but a few...
MATRIX: “We’ve certainly done a lot of mixes over the years and it’s something we really enjoy doing. It’s a different challenge to making an original record because you have to work within some boundaries rather than having a completely blank canvas. You’re also usually up against quite a tight deadline from the record company but in a way that can actually be a good thing because it forces you to make quick decisions and to go with your gut instinct. At the moment though, we’re taking a break from remixing so we can really focus on making the next Matrix & Futurebound studio album.”
FUTUREBOUND: “Yeah as Jamie said, it’s time for us to concentrate on our own new material and to take our sound to the next level.”
Viper Recordings has now become one of the most prestigious labels in the d’n’b scene, where do you see it as fitting into things?
FUTUREBOUND: “That’s nice if people think that because a lot of hard work goes in to what we do, but we just try to keep our eye’s on the ball and release the music we believe in and that will help DnB to continue to sound fresh. We have a lot of very exciting projects on the cards starting with the release of Worldwide:001 which has just dropped and following this we have great singles from ShockOne & Phetsta ‘Crucify Me Parts 1 & 2’ which will be the first single from ShockOne’s much anticipated debut album, then we have a new single from GeneticBros in July and this will be followed by “Summer Slammers 2011” which is a digital only comp series which we started in 2010. Moving into September, we’ve got an amazing piece from Furlonge entitled ‘All you ever knew’ which features Franklyn Gaye, who is a relative of legendary singer Marvin Gaye.“
How would you describe the Matrix & Futurebound sound, and what do you think sets you guys apart from the other artists?
MATRIX: “The Matrix & Futurebound sound has always been about combining lots of melodic elements with big heavyweight drum & bass production –that’s what we love but ultimately, we just make music for ourselves and then we hope that other people will like it too. That’s the only way to do it. The minute you start trying to cater for what you think is in demand or you start trying to fit in with any trends, it just doesn’t work and funnily enough, I’ve found that it’s often been the case that some of our tracks that we’ve thought people might not get have actually turned out to be some of our biggest records. ‘American Beauty’ was certainly in that category where we thought the drum & bass scene really might not go for it but we were pleasantly surprised by how well it went down. I think we also like to take our influences from lots of stuff outside d&b so that plays a big part in our sound and listening to people like Pink Floyd, Human League, Depeche Mode whilst growing up has certainly helped shape our music.“
Where would you like to see the labels in five years time
FUTUREBOUND: “We’ll always maintain our d&b focus but I can definitely see the sound of the label developing into other genres which is something we’ve already begun with a couple of dubstep tracks on our EP’s recently.”
MATRIX: “Yeah, that’s one of the great things about dance music in general at the moment… people are a lot more open minded in terms of DJ’s playing different genres within the same set. That’s kind of how it used to be in the early days and it’s definitely something that we’re embracing. I’ve always made house records over the years and have recently been doing some stuff for Roger Sanchez’sStealth Records. I’ve also just released my first dubstep track, ‘Thin Ice’ which features on Worldwide 001 so that’s something we’ll be doing more of in the future both with our labels and with our Matrix & Futurebound productions.”
What was the thinking and concept behind new record ‘Worldwide’?
MATRIX: “’Worldwide 001’ is the first in a series and it’s really one of our live sets on a record –that was the plan. We just found that we had so much good music within the Metro/Viper camp that it was a great time to showcase what we’re doing with the labels. We’ve got 36 tracks in the mix and then another 13 exclusive tracks on CD2 with music from artists such as ShockOne, Metrik, Nero, Furlonge, Eric Prydz, InsideInfo, Moving Fusion and of course some brand new tracks from ourselves.”
Worldwide features some big Viper names, including Metrik, InsideInfo, and Phetsta, as well as the return of Moving Fusion. What can you tell us about them?
FUTUREBOUND: “Well we’re definitely really proud to be releasing the first Moving Fusion records in over five years. Their track ‘Lost Without You’ is an amazing piece of vocal drum & bass and it has to be one of my favourite tracks out there at the moment. InsideInfo’s track 'Honey Bee' is definitely another big track on the album and is more on the dark side of things. It’s a really twisted amen monster of a tune that has been absolutely smashing it in the clubs and the great thing about it is that DJ’s from all corners of the d&b scene have been playing it.”
What’s up next for yourselves? Is there a new album in the works?
MATRIX: “Yes, that’s the next big project from us two, a new Matrix & Futurebound studio album. We’re working on it at the moment and it will be out early in 2012. We’ve got a few tracks down already and a whole load of ideas that are in the works. We’ll definitely be stepping outside of a pure d&b album this time so that will set it apart from Universal Truth. We’re both just really loving being in the studio at the moment.”
