Jade interviewed by Sweet Headache

Jade is probably one of the most interesting Drum&Bass-artists right know. With a sound that is both rough and very dynamic, he managed to become well-known not only in his home city Budapest (Hungary), but also around the world.
Let’s start with a current mix by Jade:
Download Link // Tracklist
Jade got infected with the Drum&Bass virus when he was fleeing from a blizzard in 2000 and ended up in a club where he heard that sound for the first time. He started producing his own tracks soon after that.
His current “Venom LP” is packed with bass-heavy Drum&Bass that has become his signature sound. However, there are also a few tracks that stick out. “The Fool” and “Strip 03″ are just two examples that show what else he can do. Being always curious about what thoughts lead to good music, I asked Jade about his influences and intentions for his sound:
“I grew up on Kemal, Ed Rush & Optical, Usual Suspects, Bad Company, so I guess that inspiration shaped my production as well. I never write music thinking it should sound like anything. It’s always about the joy of creating music. Acutally it would be cool to produce music without any boundaries, no genre, just to express what’s inside. In reality, that’s not possible. I have to walk on the path to make my name consistent, to make ‘Jade’ stand for something. It would be impossible to build a fan base with inconsistent music.
The different genre tracks I put on the bonus CD of my album proves that, those didnt recieve a big response. 3 different genre, 3 different audiences. Most of the people are not universal music listeners, they have a style they like, plus some big bands like Red Hot Chili Peppers. However, I saw an opportunity, and I put some different music on the CD for the open minded people to see what I am about musically.”
Apart from having released over 50 productions so far, many probably know him for his remix of the theme from the movie “Pulp Fiction”:
“I don’t exactly remember how I got the idea, but I do know that I had it in mind long before I actually produced it. I even had a sketch with my then-clumsy skills. Years later, when I already released a few tunes on wax, I picked up the idea again and managed to meld it into a dance floor killer. Everybody knew the original, and it was somewhat connected to the underground through the number one cult movie of all times. A good idea with a good timing.”
Jade’s musical history also contains quite a few collaborations with Matt-U, who is also from Budapest. Jade explains how they met and work together:
“I met Matt-U in 2003. At the time I was working as a Drum&Bass promoter, and Matt had an idea to bring in some new, talented, but unknown artists. This escalated into the first ever Noisia party held. In just half a year they exploded and took the scene by storm. Meanwhile, we started producing with Matt together, and our first fruit of collaboration landed on the massive BSE imprint. Then we made it to Moving Shadow, P51, 1210 to name a few, it was really great to work with him. We always had different idea about the music, I was a dancefloor maniac back then, and he was always about the musical side, all the melodies, so as a result our works were perfectly balanced. Later he left Drum&Bass for Dubstep, but we still work together for time to time, for fun. Our first 3 tunes singe is coming out on LimeDubs very soon. Expect some slow but sweeping vibes!”
His success as a DJ and producer got Jade gigs around the world. While this is certainly the dream of many newcomer artists, you probably should love traveling to enjoy stories like this:
“I love travelling, and years of playing out and touring didnt change that fact. I always took my camera with me, and I always look at the world through curious eyes. However, sometimes it’s completely exhausting. A year ago I was playing in Wellington (New Zealand) as the last date of my tour with State of Mind, and Dose. Right after playing they took me to the airport, and after our sad goodbyes went to Auckland, where I was able to sleep for a few hours, then Auckland-Sydney-Bangkok-London-Budapest, followed by a nice sleep, then off to Russia, Budapest-Moscow-Vladivostok, back to the same +12 time zone that I was just in 2 days ago, but on the other hemisphere. That week I was flying over 70 hours, but it was absolutely worth it! Check out the pictures I made on facebook!”
My other favourite travel related story occurred only a month later, when i was playing in Calgary, Canada. On the plane, I was already suspicious, wondering why was the flight doing that loop around Iceland, and when I landed I was told about the volcano. I was stranded in Calgary for a week, and I couldn’t be more happy. The promoter crew was friendly, they took me on trips to the Rockies, we even went to an university lecture about the street art situation in Canada.”
During his travels, Jade also experienced how different local scenes can be in different parts of the world. One might think that everyone has access to more or less the same music, but the local preferences can still be pretty special:
“Over my travels what I saw is separation is very strong between countries, cities, and sometimes even different promoters in one city. In some cities there is no Drum&Bass at all. I played disappointing gigs in world wide famous metropolises, and I also played massive raves in small towns. I have a good example, recently I used to tend to finish my sets with the huge hit “The Bug” by Magnetic Man. In 2 different Slovakian towns it had the absolute opposite effect. First it was exploding, then it was a disaster.”
Jade has already seen quite a bit of the world’s dancefloors, and 2011 could be another big year for him:
“I’m looking at a 2011 full of promises, I hope most of them come true! Most importantly, I’m launching my own label eventually, it will be called ‘Eatbrain’. First 12″ already sent for test press. First single is Audio Hypnosis / Here We Go w/ State Of Mind. 2nd Single is going to be a remix EP of my album called Venom. Bookings are looking promising as well, hopefully USA, Canada, Japan, Australia, New Zealand will see me playing besides Europe.”
If you would like to know more about Jade and his music, you can find him on Facebook and SoundCloud.
Thanks to Scott who got me in contact with Jade!

AEPH INTERVIEW ON BEATPORTAL
Growing up in Rome, listening to the likes of Bad Company and Dillinja while rocking out in death metal outfits, leading the life of a big-time drum & bass producer and DJ was a far-off dream for Simone Vallecorsa, aka Aeph.
Fast forward to the present and Simone is living that dream. Having moved to London and signed up to Bad Company’s imprint (imaginatively titled Bad Taste Recordings), Aeph is highly regarded as one of the most talented up-and-coming producers within the hard-edged community. Read on to find out more, and don’t miss his new single, ”Bad Wolf / Scumbag,” out today on Bad Taste. You’ll find his new Beatport Top 10 at the bottom of the post.
Can you tell us a little about your background? Where did you grow up, and where are you based now?
I grew up in Rome. In 2000 I was really into rap and old-school electro beats. In 2003 I started playing with a metal band called In Cold Blood (the members are still my best mates in Italy) and I suddenly got fascinated by the drum & bass vibe, thanks to producers like Bad Company, Dillinja, Blame, and Concord Dawn.
In those days I didn’t write so many tracks because I was focused on the band and on my sound engineer job, but I bought a pair of CDJs and I spent hours on them. Then I met some local scene promoters and they introduced me as a DJ in Linux Club, a really popular club in the Italian d’n’b movement. That experience was great and it helped me to understand my real vocation. In 2008 I moved to London, and now I’ve been here for three years. This city allows you to do what you really want to do.
What was one of the most influential records that got you into making music?
There are plenty of tunes that influenced my path, but the whole “Cybotron” EP by Dillinja was and it is still just too much. “Valve Sound” remains one of my favourite tunes ever.
How would you describe the music that you make?
It’s all about me, it’s just Aeph sound.
Did you have any mentors when you were starting out? Who helped you get established?
Arp Xp, Hlz and the Romastyle guys put their trust in me from the beginning, and I will always stop to thank them for the opportunities and the advice they gave me. I remember when Arp Xp was playing my first drum & bass tune on a radio show and talking about me—it was a great feeling.
How did you end up at Bad Taste Recordings?
I sent my track “Scumbag” to them, just for some feedback, and Jonas (Uman from Blokhe4d) was really into it. We decided to meet up at their place, and to my surprise I realised they are really down-to-earth guys. We always have a good time together talking about the scene and everything else. I’m so glad, and I feel lucky for that. I couldn’t ask for more.
When you sit down to make a track, what’s the first thing you typically do? How long does a track typically take you to make?
It depends; sometimes I start with a drum pattern or messing around with some VST, playing random chords or making basslines. Once I find the right riff I start to arrange the track straight away without thinking too much about how it sounds—but always trying to choose the right sounds that fit perfectly with the rest. This is probably the most difficult part. When a track takes more than four weeks to be finished, it means that there is something wrong. The tunes I arrange in two weeks are usually the best ones, because at the end they are still fresh and I’m not bored by them.
Where do you record?
I used to have my studio in the garage, but it was so freakin’ cold in winter time, so I moved it in the living room.
Do you currently have a favorite piece of gear/software?
I’m with Cubase 5 and I’m quite comfortable with it, especially for the audio editing. Native Instruments stuff is the best for the style of music I’m producing, but at the moment I’m really into MorphoX and the Tone 2 Gladiator VST. I’ve just bought a Liquid Mix from Focusrite and I’m also trying to get some nasty and stinky hardwares to step up my productions.
What two tracks are you playing out at the most at the moment?
“Contraire” by Neonlight, which is gonna be out on Bad Taste soon, and “Amigo” by Fourward.
What’s been your favourite gig as of late?
I’ve been in Puerto Rico recently and it was banging; I didn’t expect so many people, the place and the vibe were just perfect. Another wicked night was in Rome for the Get Numb Fest 2010 with Spor, Foreign Beggars, 2 Many DJs and many more. Sick vibe, huge crowd, and every time I play in my hometown in front of my people it’s a rare pleasure.
What other DJs and producers in your scene do you think deserve some more credit?
Hlz from Need For Mirrors is doing great. He knows what he’s doing, he just can’t write bad tunes. I hope my mates Dabs and Maztek will achieve what they deserve because they are kickass producers.
When you’re not listening to electronic music, what do you listen to?
I’m still a huge metal fan, and in my iPod I always have albums from Unearth, Lamb Of God, As I Lay Dying, Parkway Drive. I’m also a big consumer of movie soundtracks, especially the one from ‘70s/’80s. If I had to pick two names, I’d say Stelvio Cipriani and John Carpenter.
When you’re not making or playing music, what’s your preferred pastime?
Paying monthly for the gym that I never attend.
Tell us about your upcoming gigs and releases…
The next gig is gonna be in Granada, Spain, February 25. For anyone who might be interested, I’ve just joined the Diamond Society booking agency. About my forthcoming tunes, after the first Bad Taste release with Bad Wolf/Scumbag, there are two more tracks coming up on the mighty Bad Taste’s album volume 4, which is gonna be huge. Then, nothing is predictable.

Optiv mentioned in BTK DOA Interview
source
BTK DOA Interview
DOA: We feel like your name has been bubbling for a while, but it hasn't been until recently that you've been getting your acclaim, with releases on Virus, Hardware, Subtitles and Uprising solidifying what people have known. How would you describe your style of Drum & Bass?
BTK: I define my music as percussive, dark, mean, sometimes moody, deep sub bass in your face, that's my sound, but I try not to pigeonhole it to one style. I've been DJing Drum & Bass music since 1999 and in 2008 I decided to focus 100% of my time into music production. I believe that it had a big impact on the quality of my sound, helping me to step up in the game, reaching the A-list record labels such as Renegade Hardware and Virus.
DOA: You're another cat who’s from Brazil. With guys like Marky, S.P.Y, Bungle and the like already making a splash on the DnB scene, how does your style differ from what they provide?
BTK: I really rate what those guys did and are still doing for the scene. Marky is an inspiration for me as a DJ, one of the best I have ever seen and was my first contact with the Drum & Bass sound. I could say that most of the Brazilian Drum & Bass has got that samba/feel good music, while I'm more on the mean side, aiming for the screw faces on the dancefloor. Since the beginning I always had support from Renegade Hardware's camp and that had a big influence on my way to shape my music.
DOA: You recently set up your imprint, Dutty Audio. Tell us about the reason for starting this label, and what you are looking at, goal-wise, for the label.
BTK: Dutty Audio is my own identity, the music I like and promote. Also, it's a good way to have my own outlet and release my beats in an independent way. I believe that's one of the main reasons why a producer/DJ starts their own imprint. Dutty Audio's first release is available only as digital format but, for the future I'm planning some releases also on vinyl, always aiming as a goal to release quality over quantity.
DOA: The first release on Dutty Audio is your Straight Up EP. Is this kind of the definitive statement the label is trying to make, or will we be seeing a varying of sounds/styles on Dutty Audio?
BTK: I have nothing against ideas to release a track that's not 100% Drum & Bass made by myself, or another artist that I like, but for now, I want to get the label identity firmly set.
DOA: We noticed that your forthcoming release schedule not only has tunes with the aforementioned S.P.Y., but cuts alongside Ink, Optiv, Uman and Resound. What's it like getting opportunities to link up with heavy hitters like that?
BTK: My friendship with Ink comes from a long way, since my days living in Brazil. He's always keen to help me with feedback on my tunes and good advice that got me to keep it going as incentive. We've been working on a series of Drum & Bass tracks and few other projects. Optiv is practically my neighbour here in Switzerland, which leads us to have more personal contact. We always have a good flow working in studio and from a few sessions together this year we're celebrating 2 tracks signed on Teebee's Subtitles called "Let It Hit Em" and "Jacknife" and recently, one of our new beats called "Backlash" has been taken by Ed Rush & Optical's Virus Recordings. Also, for being Brazilian, to work with S.P.Y happened on a natural way. Early this year we did a tune called "Save Me" that’s forthcoming on Total Science's C.I.A and we still got other things to be finished.
DOA: We saw that you've got a collabs EP coming as the 2nd Dutty Audio release - but no info regarding who you're working with! Can you give us some hints or info on what we can expect from that release?
BTK: The 2nd release will be a full remix EP of my first release on Dutty Audio. Octane & DLR, Genotype, Mindscape & Optiv are remixing the bits and I'm really looking forward to that. I could risk a release date for February / March 2011.
DOA: Can we get a current top 10 from you?
BTK:
BTK - Things I Do (Spectrasoul Remix)(Demand)
Optiv & BTK - Backlash (Virus)
Kitech feat. Zilla Rocca - Embryo (FreakMP3)
Octane, DLR & Survival - Spectrum (Audio Tactics)
Ink & BTK - 5 Elements (Hardware)
Meth - Perch (Raiden Remix)(OffKey)
Logistics & IllSkillz - Notes From Da Block (Hospital)
Chris.SU - Datahub (Mindscape Remix)(Subtitles)
Usual Suspects - Killa Bees (Phobia Remix)(Hardware)
BTK - Drop It (tbc)
DOA: How can artists get in contact with you regarding submitting demos for Dutty Audio?
BTK: It's easy to reach the label over AIM ("duttyaudio") or email at duttyaudio@gmail.com or getting in touch with any of these websites: MySpace, Facebook, SoundCloud, Twitter and YouTube.
DOA: Any final thoughts before we wrap this up?
BTK: Thanks for giving me this opportunity to get my music heard. It means a lot. Thanks everyone for supporting my music.

Gridlok, Prolix and MC Fats ‘Tru Born Playa’ / ‘Got To Roll’ – LIMITED PRE RELEASE
Having smashed their way into 2011 with a huge release from DJ Hazard, DJ Hype & Pascal’s Playaz imprint continues to dominate the world of drum & bass. Official member of the Playaz camp, Prolix, teams up with MC Fats and LA based producer Gridlok for this release, which has been tearing up raves in DJ Hype’s sets for months.
Straddling the line between the disgusting D&B Prolix and Gridlok are known for making and the soulful style Fats has become associated, ‘Tru Born Playa’ could easily have turned into a massive mess. Instead it blends up the styles with pinpoint accuracy and the only mess will be the dancefloor when this one gets dropped!
Dropping into some seriously sexy liquid vibes on the AA side, MC Fats gets back to the epic wide-open style he’s renowned for with saxophone licks and stepping jungle beats. It’s not long before Prolix & Gridlok slip in a heavyweight bassline to juxtapose the whole affair though, and this track will no doubt keep people moving even at peak time.
They say that music goes around in cycles, and this, the latest in a string of huge releases from Playaz, just goes to show that D&B is back on the upswing!

A little on our guest:

I first started my interest in creating music in 1998 where I met Marty Rideout who was taking music production courses at Miles MacDonnell. He then taught me many things about production, until I re-met a childhood friend, J.P. Perrault. Through them I met Jeremy and we togther fed off each other's creativity and grew exponentially as artists. As the group drifted apart my interest in becoming a DJ grew. With the many influences in my life I now strive to be the best DJ I can be, always changing and evolving, trying new things and adapting all forms into my performance.

Optiv and Prolix mentioned in a BLOCKHE4D comp release 'Bad Taste 4' interview given by TrackItDown
source
The heavyweight pairing of ex-Bad Company boy Vegas and Uman, that is Blokhe4d, returns with another ferocious installment of the Bad Taste chronicles. Showing their production pedigree across two storming slabs of undeniable dance floor pressure, this is one release that demands to be heard. So strap yourselves in and check out this interview as things are about to get serious.
Vegas you were part of the original Bad Company and Uman you were part of Task Horizon, how did the Blokhe4d collaboration come about and where does the name come from?
Jonas (Uman): Well i was working in Switzerland on my own under Uman and working with a Vocalist on a project called The Passive Resistance. With the Passive Resistance I won a Swiss music award for best electronic act. This i thought would open doors for me back in Zurich. It did open a few but not as many as Ihad hoped. I eventually came to notice that I was in the wrong country to do what I wanted to do. So I decided to move to England and try my luck here.
Mick (Vegas): Well Jonas was actually kind of cheeky to be honest. He was doing an engineering course up in London and asked me on aim if it would be ok to use our studio space for a little bit until he had settled in and found something on his own. This then happened, and the first tune we finished together was snatched up by Hospital. The vibe in the studio was great and working with Jonas just seemed to click. A few weeks down the line the idea of doing a project together came up and that’s how Blokhe4d was born. As for the name, we were just going through a bunch of different ones when Blokhe4d dropped. We all liked it as it had the potential to become something of its own. It can be made into a character, a comic, whatever you want.
If you guys weren’t doing music what would you be doing? Any hidden talents?
Mick: I think I would be into special FX for movies. But in reality I would most likely be an author or a porn king.
Jonas: I would like to think I would be wealthy and successful. That’s what my job would be.
What else do you listen to apart from D&B? And where do you draw your influences from outside of D&B?
Jonas: I like anything to be honest. There are different things I look for in a tune. The longer I am involved with making music the more I tend to look for subtleties. Sometimes the "space" a track can create is already enough to get me. There are so many different reasons to like or dislike something. Listening to our podcast you can hear how diverse our taste in music is. It just has to get us.
Mick: In general there are two poles that interest us most. They would be energy and intensity and on the other side depth and honesty. What bothers me with a lot of modern music is it’s not personal. I hear a tune and i hear someone wanting to make an anthem the way it was done by some one else. This flattens out the potential dynamics music can have. Its not just dance music, it goes all the way up to the top.
Can you tell us about your studio set up?
Mick: It’s a room. With two chairs. Two speakers and a computer.
What is your favourite bit of equipment you couldn’t live without?
Jonas: Nowadays anyone who doesn't say "the computer" hasn't really thought this question through. I can tell what I could live without... Latency.
What do you think of the way deejaying technology is developing? Are you using vinyl, CDs, laptop?
Mick: We use CDs. Have been for over 5 years now. I think you have to embrace new technology otherwise you will just be living in the nostalgic past.
What has been your most memorable performance?
Jonas: Just came back from 2 shows in Puerto Rico. Was amazing! I had the time of my life and met people that will be friends of mine for a long time.
Mick: When I played Peter Pan in last years Christmas panto.
What do you enjoy doing when you’re not making music or performing? How do you chill out?
Mick: Lately we have both been going kick boxing that's been great for both mind and body. Apart from that we run the label, which is really busy at the moment. When we chill we tend to really chill and do as little as possible.
Who you would most like to see Blokhe4d team up with on the ultimate collaboration?
Mick: John Carpenter, Trent Reznor, Quincy Jones
Jonas: Brian Eno, Tom Morello, Danny Elfman, Mike Patton
D&B is often cited as one of the most credible music scenes around but do you have any musical guilty pleasures?
Jonas: Mick loves the radio and X Factor!
Mick: Jonas listens to some weird shit sometimes.
Many people say the Mayans have predicted the end of the world in 2012, who would you feature on the line up of the last party on earth?
Jonas: It’s not the end of the world. Maybe the end of man kind but the world will still be here. But I don't think its going to be on a predictable date. Some time in the future something is bound to happen. When that time comes we will know it. Everyone thought the world would end in 2000. Still here...
Bad Taste is a legendary label with an impressive catalogue, what's lines up for Blokhe4d and Bad Taste over the coming months?
Mick: To begin with we have the Beyond the Void/Horror Show 12" from us and the Bad Wolf / Scumbag 12" By Aeph both of which we feel are strong 12s. After that there is Bad Taste 4! This is a compilation album of our favourite tunes from artists on the label, including Fourward, Telekinesis, Optiv, Upbeats, Audio, Aeph and Prolix. We are very happy with this. There is so much good music around! Following the album we have a 12" by Hedj. A German producer who we were looking to get music off for the label. But sadly passed away in a rafting accident shortly after sending us a project he wanted to collab on with us. We finished up the collab called "Spirit" and got an amazing tune by him and Neonlight called "The Joker" to go with it. We got his girlfriend involved and she got a friend of his to do the artwork. The proceeds will go to his family.
After that we have two great tunes by Neonlight lined up and tonnes more in the pipeline!!
Sounds like you've got a strong year ahead. Finally, any shout outs?
Jonas: All my friends in Puerto Rico! D in Australia, Jamie Parkin and his lovely Misses, ah man so many more...
Mick: Everyone on the label and everyone involved! Thanks for all the support. Most of all big thanks to Gareth!

Edward Oberon mentioned in Example Magazine interview with Translation Recordings head Brian Roguestate
source
Translation Recordings has been friends with Example for a while now. We thought it was about time we caught up with the label head honcho Birian Roguestate.
Example: First of all Brian, What was the idea behind Translation Recordings , The inspiration behind it all? How did it all get started?
Brian: Translation was started in the summer of 2004 and was initially a venture between me, and my good friend Will, who I’ve known since grade school. His work at ESL Music has led him to pursue other genres of music, so on most days it’s just me behind the scenes, with significant promotional help from Steph MsDisdain. The ethos behind the label is fairly straight forward—to release music with depth and character, suitable for all listening environments. The inspiration behind the label really just stems from an undying love for all things drum&bass and a desire to be more than a passive listener.
Example: You've just released an EP by Theory and the first release from your new find Johnny Beverton how did you come across him? Do you have any tips for budding producers wanting to get their music heard by yourself?
Brian: LM1 from Offworld Recordings first introduced me to Johnny, and I think what really sealed the deal for me was his love of other genres of music. When you listen to one of his tracks, you can really tell that his influences come from outside the drum&bass scene, which is always a good look. As a budding producer it’s important to stay consistent, be patient, and spend time on the details—taking the extra bit of time to sample or tweak your mixdown can really make your music stand out.
Example: What style of Drum n' Bass gets your attention the most? Is there any particular style you are more interested in hearing?
Brian: There really isn’t any particular style of drum&bass that gets our attention. It’s all about whether or not a song “sticks.” Sometimes it’s instantaneous, but others take time. I’ll play tunes out in a variety of places and settings—like Bassdrive, or on a pair of headphones, off a theater system, or in the car… if it sticks over a period of a time, meaning if the energy behind the tune can be felt consistently on every rewind, then its game on.
Example: Who else is on the Label, that we all need to know about?
Brian: We’ve got six vinyl and eight digital releases out. Our first LP “Without Borders” dropped this year featuring music from ASC, Mindmapper, DBR (UK), Marginal, Dub Phizix, Edward Oberon, Grimm & Nusense, Stranjah, Theory, Resound, Slider & Expose, and we’re really excited at the response it got on CD and digital distro—thanks for all the promotional support when we rolled that out in July/August. Additionally, Sabre's remix of Resound's "Secrets" really set off a new theme for Translation's sound. We're also so stoked to have remixes lined up for the near future so stay tuned!
Example: What are your plans for 2011?
Brian: We’re beginning to gather tracks for our next LP/CD project, have remixes from Survival and Seba slated for vinyl, and are increasing the digital release schedule for 2011. Expect to see more from the likes of our newer signings including tunes from Johnny Beverton, Nuage, DBR (UK), Jaybee, Flatliners, as well as newer sounds from our veteran producers Theory and Resound.
Example: Who else can you see breaking through in 2011 with their music? Anybody in particular you would like to mention?
Brian : First off, we want to thank every person that has contributed to Translation Recordings - the talent we've encountered and the soul we've felt behind every one of the tunes in our catalogue is what keeps us doing what we love to do: promoting sweet sound. Look out for great music coming from Mindmapper, Furi Anga, June Miller among tons of others. We're excited to see where drum 'n bass goes in 2011.
Example: Anything else you would like to add or promote?
How to get to us:

www.facebook.com/translationrecordings
www.twitter.com/translationrecs
And check out MsDisdain and I on Translation Sound (www.bassdrive.com) every Monday from 7-8pm (EST) / 12-am (UK). Love to the chat room kru!
Example: The big question on a lot of peoples lips right now is, what are your opinions on the whole Vinyl, Digital debate as the whole music scene is going through a lot of rapid changes at the moment? Can you see Vinyl lasting another 10 years?
Brian: Vinyl will always have its timeless place in the scene—particularly with the diehards—and I’m personally a fan of having a physical product (not to mention I'm a vinyl junkie), but you definitely can’t ignore the increasing shift towards digital. However, regardless of the platform, the tunes have to stand out, the promotion has to be there, and the timing between releases has to be just right. Vinyl will always be here, but who knows what things will look like in a decade's time.
Example: Fishnets or Stockings?
Brian: Haha, joker… I’ll get back to you on that (MsDisdain says Fishnets). Thanks and bigup [Ex]:ample fam!

That every cause has an effect is common knowledge. For Optiv, Stuart and Mark, the cause is drum & bass, and their effect is both indelible and undeniable, collectively known as Cause 4 Concern. Aside from being an integral part of Cause4Concern, Optiv had also built up a large selection of solo releases and in 2003 started his own imprint label ‘Redlight Records’ . The label was very well received from the start and has included collaborations and remixes from the likes of Black Sun Empire, Concord Dawn, The Upbeats, Bulletproof, Mayhem, Psidream, Chris Su, Dose , & Rymetyme. The label continues to grow strong with the latest offering from German producer Proktah.
Last year Cause4Concern returned to wreak havoc with their first full length album. Spread over five separate 12”s and followed by a double CD, Pandemic picked up right where the lads left off – the leading edge of electronic music. Now in 2010 Cause4Concern continue to release plenty of new material on their label C4C Recordings as well as securing tracks on Horizons, Cyclon & Renegade Hardware.

We got a chance to ask him a few questions inbetween his busy schedule and here's what he had to say:
EverydayJunglist:You currently reside in Switzerland, What is the drum and bass scene like in Bern, and Switzerland in general?
Optiv: Switzerland is a small country but i think the scene here is quite strong. There are some
great nights here in Bern at Dachstock Darkside, the parties are monthly with great international DJ’s and they are almost always sold out.
EverydayJunglist:How is the weather there?
Optiv: At the moment its cold and there is lots of snow around, i like that as i ski quite often.
EverydayJunglist:The art for Red Light is quite twisted, Who does the art?
Optiv: The art is by an artist called John Hicklenton who worked as an illustrator for the comic 2000AD (Judge Dredd, ABC Warriors etc). Sadly he passed away this year in Dignitas in Switzerland after fighting multiple sclerosis for 10 years.
EverydayJunglist:Do you jump in the studio with your collaborators or do you send tracks back and forth via the web?
Optiv: I try and get in the studio with people i work with as i prefer to work face to face. I don’t mind sending tracks back and forth via the web but it’s not quite the same vibe. I recently did some creative cabling and managed to have a real-time online studio session with Mark from Cause4Concern, we used a combination of Skype and TeamViewer and as well as seeing and hearing each other we were both able to see, hear and manipulate the same project in Cubase in real-time; it worked far better than i thought it would so perhaps that is the future of online collaborations.
EverydayJunglist:Your a part of prestigious Cause4Concen, how did you guys decide to start producing together?
Optiv: We were friends all working in the industry in one way or the other, whether it was in the local record store or distributing vinyl. We would come back from parties and start making beats and it all came together quite naturally.
EverydayJunglist:What is your home production set up like?
Optiv: Its quite smaller than it used to be but it all centres around my quad core pc. Apart from running Cubase and some other software i have a Mackie Big Nob, Mackie Onyx mixing desk, Powercore Firewire, Steinberg MR816x sound card, NI Audio Kontrol 1 Soundcard, NI Kore controller, Mackie HR824 speakers, Novation Remote 32sl keyboard, Novation Supernova Rack and a Korg Prophecy.
EverydayJunglist:Have any vices that help get you into "the zone," when producing or mixing?
Optiv: I don’t really need any, a beer or two doesn’t go a miss.
EverydayJunglist:What do you prefer to DJ with, still throwin' down wax?
Optiv: These days i just DJ with Cd’s. I do sometimes miss playing with vinyl but i don’t miss having to carry them around. I did try Stanton’s Vinyl Scratch for a while until a couple of laptops died. I have come to the decision that playing from CD’s is the most practical solution.
EverydayJunglist:Coming from an era where digital stores were non existent, is it difficult to see vinyl fade away?
Optiv: It was at first but now i just except it. Its great to own music in a tangible form like vinyl but that technology is over 100 years old so it’s understandable that the digital format has superseded it.
EverydayJunglist:Have any plans to make it out to the states any time soon?
Optiv: I think a tour is being planned for April / May next year through my agent Cyber Groove ( http://www.cybergrooveprod.com/) so if there are any promoters out there please get in touch.
EverydayJunglist:What can we expect from Optiv/C4C in the 2011?
Optiv: Plenty of new music, as well as music on Red Light and C4C Recordings there are tracks planned on Subtitles, Virus, Renegade Hardware, Bad Taste to name a few.
EverydayJunglist:Have any words of advice for the up and coming producers out there?
Optiv: Explore, Create and have fun. Persistence is the key.
