Italian Job: 2 Kilo Mockingbird - Pair A Dice (Maztek Dubstep Remix) [LessThan3 Feature]

LISTEN

The neurofunk sub-genre of drum'n'bass has been boiling over with talent lately. One such talent is Italian producer Maztek, who is known for his mutated synth leads and aggressive basslines. Although Maztek admits to having influences ranging from electro to breaks, his tunes usually reside in the 170bpm range, synonymous with d'n'b and neurofunk . However, on rare occasion, Maztek will craft a dubstep banger like his remix of Pair A Dice by 2 Kilo Mockingbird. The tune, out on Binary Feedback, is a gap-bridging stormer that would fit into a DJ set of brostep or the darker UK dubstep variety.

Maztek's remix of Pair A Dice is slick and swanky; the tune's various synth elements layer perfectly on top of the lush vocal sample. With no grinding or squealing lead melodies to be found, the song simply relies on its wobbles, dark bassline, and creative vocal processing to keep the listener's interest. The drum programming, with everything from woodblocks to bongos, is incredibly complex, giving the track another layer of sophistication.

Slow Jam Sundays – DJ Sw@t

http://allyouneedisbass.com/slow-jam-sundays-dj-swat/ - source

I’m going to go out on a limb here and assume that everyone is enjoying as beautiful of a Sunday as we are here. Even here in the frozen arctic wasteland of Canada, the snow and ice has begun to disappear. Soon we will be able to dig out our lawn chairs and eat poutine outside on a patio.

For our first Slow Jam Sunday we are super happy to feature Winnipeg DJ/Producer DJ Sw@t. This Canadian dynamo of drum and bass doles out some of the most perfectly chill downtempo sounds for your Sunday soundtrack. We have been enjoying this mix for the past few days and it would be a shame not to share it with the rest of the world.

We hope you enjoy this set as much as we do and don’t forget to head over to her facebook page and tell her how much you like the mix!

A.

D&BTV 200: In The Rhythmix - 24hr Broadcast for Charity

Heads up: max your sleep quota now! On June 6-7 D&BTV Live will be celebrating their 200th show with a whopping 24hour live broadcast featuring sets from some of the best names in the game while raising money for an incredibly just cause.

Introducing Rhythmix, a Brighton-based charity whose founding principals resonate with us every single way. Since 1999 the charity has strived to create opportunities for over 40,000 young people via our favourite medium: music. Developing programs that address exclusion, challenging circumstances and young people at risk, their whole existence is based on building the confidence of one of the most maligned section of society.

“The end goal is social improvement, regeneration and the empowering of young people to be more confident and gain more self esteem,” explains Russ Grooms, Rhythmix Campaigns Manager. “Young people are often misunderstood, not given the time to express themselves or given the opportunity to work out their own direction. There’s an incredible amount of pressure on young people many fall by the wayside, suffering mental health issues or getting in trouble with the police. Other young people come from troubled backgrounds or suffer the loss of a parent which leads them to behave in certain ways. We try to be there to say, it’s okay, let’s make some music and talk about the things that are going on for you. It’s easy to forget that these people are children and are vulnerable to many things.”

The charity’s impressive technique allows for all levels of skill, meaning any youth with so much of an interest in music can explore their potential without any pressure or strict educational structure. It’s not about turning young people into the next superstars; it’s about helping people find out more about themselves, raising their confidence and giving them a more enriched set of skills for the next stage in their life.

“We’ve seen a lot of young people who’ve already invested in this whole X-Factor culture of celebrity and think that by doing our workshops, we’re going to make them a big star,” says Russ. “We can forgive them for thinking that, the media is very pressurising and if someone is living in a poor area, why wouldn’t they dream of becoming a rich pop star? However, as much as we would support and encourage this route if the young person genuinely had the talent to succeed, there are many other levels of success. Success could be a young person who’s been bereaved and lost their parents and has now developed an ability to communicate how they feel through writing songs. From being utterly devastated and feeling very angry and smashing things up moving to a position where they’re able to understand the bereavement, understand how they fit in with that and potentially go on and live a healthy life, well, that’s potentially a far greater success than making a track, getting it on the radio and becoming famous.”

A sentiment all of us can identify with; the whole reason you’re reading this, the whole reason I’m writing this and the whole reason Drum&BassArena was founded in the first place is because we’ve all been lucky enough to find music. We all relish in music’s calming, invigorating, stimulating energy. It brings people together and influences us in so many ways. Bottom line: music strikes such a strong chord in us it would be utterly impossible to imagine life without it.

“Rhythmix’s message and hard work is incredible,” says The Risky. “I can’t think of a more suitable way to celebrate this landmark 200th live show than by helping to investment in the future generation of Drum&Bass musicians and help with the scene’s legacy.”

Throughout the 24 hour live broadcast we’ll be raising awareness and funds for Rhythmix to continue their hard work. More details on what we’re doing will be revealed very soon. For now, head here for more details on Rhythmix and keep 7pm – 7pm between June 6-7 free as we broadcast live sets from….

AK1200 LIVE in Green Bay May 11 2012

Here is a recording of a recent show I played with a wicked sound system. It may get a little sloppy towards the end, but I was drinking and feeling the vibe. anyway, there's a lot of great drum and bass tunes in there, and I hope some of the EDM fans out there who have yet to embrace DnB, will give this mix a listen, and put themselves on the floor that night, and let the vibe guide you over to our side. please share this with everyone you possibly can, and help us bring this shit back proper.

thanks, dave ak :)

Dubstep Dreams Mix Tape feat DJ 2RIP & Theory

Cyber Groove Artist Management in association with B.A.D.A.S.S. RAVES and Theory Present:

What to expect from this mixtape?
Killer mixing, and a dope track selection from the DJ 2RIP with flawless lyrical/vocal ability from Theory.

Origin of Project:

as told by Scott McCusker, owner of Cyber Groove Productions/Artist Management

Dubstep being in the spotlight right now in North America’s EDM scene it has seemed that the role of the MC has diminished. I didn’t take this realization very lightly. Cyber Groove is proud to act as an agency to some of the world’s top MCs in the bass music genre. I am also a huge supporter of the idea of having a MC involved with live bass music events. A MC provides a true show element; it keeps the attendees entertained throughout the entire DJ’s set, so it is a definite win/win situation for all parties involved.

Cyber Groove’s Discovery of Theory
A member of my staff brought a YouTube video to my attention which was a hip hop artist by the name of Theory rhyming over the Skrillex track “First of the Year” (http://youtu.be/UYYF16JwMuw). The Skrillex track alone is a great tune but having Theory on it, WOW. The track sounds as if Skrillex himself hand picked Theory for a remix, but for the record, this track is not an official remix.

Watching this video blew me away, I am a fan of dubstep and hip hop is my first love so to put them together it definitely made a lot of sense, and on top of that the video production on this video is mind blowing. Theory’s timing on the track reminded me of a drum and bass MC so I had to reach out to him to see what other projects we could create for him.

The Pitch
I approached Theory with the idea of releasing a free mixtape to get his sound heard by the masses of the bass music genre. Also as an agency I want to introduce that given a certain style of MCing, the MC can be booked out again onto all of these Dubstep shows around North America like how the MC is utilized on Drum and Bass shows. Theory coming from a Hip Hop/R&B background was at first blown away since the idea was a little foreign to him (Hip Hop/R&B tracks are usually 3 to 5 minutes long); to rhyme over an entire mix of bass music (~30 minutes / primarily dubstep) like how drum and bass mix tapes were done back in the day, but accepted the project immediately.

The DJ
The selection of the DJ to do the mix was a tricky one, geographic location had a lot to do with it and it had to be a Cyber Groove artist, but more importantly skill and popularity had to be there and DJ 2RIP has all of those things. DJ 2RIP when he’s not melting your face is owner of Badass Raves an event production company that spans over many regions (primarily on the east coast) pushing the bass music sound and usually crams in 1200 - 3000 people into his events. I sent the video to 2RIP that Theory did for the Skrillex track and 2RIP was on board after the first verse. DJ 2RIP put together a multi genre mix of Dubstep, Electro, and even some Moombahton, all to test Theory’s ability as a MC, and lets just say, Theory Aced it!

RVA Mag - Psychedelic Dreamscape: An Interview With DJ 2Rip

http://rvamag.com/articles/full/14954/psychedelic-dreamscape-an-interview-with-dj-2rip

I have heard quite a few things about DJ 2Rip over the years from several big EDM parties up north. Recently I caught wind of a huge party he was playing up in the DMV area that was being thrown by B.A.D.ASS Raves, called Psychedelic Dreamscape 2. I have been wanting to check out 2Rip for quite some time and decided to get in touch. I have to say this: I have talked to quite a few people in the electronic music scene over the years, and I was very happy to find someone so down to earth. Seriously, he loves the music, and appreciates all those around him that help make it happen. So I'm totally stoked on this interview, and hope to pull him down to RVA some time. Check it out below...

Why did you pick 2Rip as your DJ name?

I used to perform under my full name but in January of 2000 I had made the cut to play on a really big lineup. I felt like having a DJ name would be beneficial to me for that show. The name was chosen as my sister's boyfriend and I were watching Boiler Room. Vin Diesel & Giovanni Ribisi had a boss in that movie who had "2RIP" on his license plate in the movie. My sister's boyfriend pointed at the screen and said "Why don't you use that?" I arbitrarily decided to use it, under the assumption that I could later change my DJ name if I wanted. My time slot for the show was a closing set at 6 AM, and I didn't anticipate many people sticking around to hear me on that lineup. But surprisingly enough, a good 400 people were still on the dancefloor, and I got encored twice with people chanting my new DJ name. So I decided to keep the name after all.

What made you want to start DJing / Producing?

I've always felt musically inclined. When growing up I taught myself to play guitar and piano, but was never very successful with it. I always wanted to be a performer, and my skills were too underdeveloped to ever be in a band. I also grew up on electronic music, having started listening to it in 1991. Learning how Trent Reznor from Nine Inch Nails produced his beats from his basement really inspired me to produce, and becoming involved in the rave scene skyrocketed my interest in DJing.

What artists have influenced you the most?

There has been a progression over the years. Recently my musical taste has been influenced by bassline music and producers like Jay Robinson, AC Slater, Figure, and Delta Heavy.

What was Buzz like for you "back in the day"? How has the scene changed over the years?

Buzz was where you went on Friday night to party with thousands of people who loved rave music. It had become a gathering place for all of my friends and was essentially a ritual. I can't think of a Friday night when I lived in DC that I didn't spend at Buzz at Nation Nightclub. The scene back then was very focused on nightclub events, and most of the parties outside of Buzz were 21+. The regional scene nowadays is a large spread, from age 16 the whole way past the age of 40, depending on the event. It's really cool to see such a big demographic. However, the age gaps can be unsettling for some of the people who sit at opposing ends of the spectrum.

Where are your favorite places to spin?

Anywhere that people are fully engaged in the musical element and prepared to eat up whatever I give them!

Other than electronic music, what types of music are you into?

I grew up with punk rock and metal, so I am inclined to still listen to my old CD collection. If I ever get married I would use "Some Kinda Hate" by The Misfits as my wedding song.

OK, so I have to ask: all time favorite track to drop to surprise people?

I have a few hip hop tracks that I like to surprise people with. The last time I played in Richmond I played "Drop It Like It's Hot" by Snoop Dogg, and enjoyed the reactions I got from it. Some people thought it was a remix and I could see them getting ready for the drop that never came. And other people were giving me the look of "Oh, you went there, didn't you?" Probably my favorite tune that I play almost everywhere is a heavy drum and conga based track called "Congo Drums" by Rene Kuppens. It's aggressive and heavy, and it's such an energy booster when you've already got people hyped. It just takes things to the next level. To this date, I've never heard another DJ play it.

You just completed over 30 gigs on the Annihilating Rhythm 4 Tour. Can you tell me what you learned from doing this tour?

This was my second tour of this size, and it was the first time where I went months at a time without ever seeing my house. The best thing about touring was that I got to play for so many new people, and I got to see areas of the country that I would have never gotten to experience. The downside to touring is that it actually gets pretty lonely when you don't have anyone to travel with. So I was really thankful for all the ragers who invited me to dinner or to afterparties. A lot of new friendships were made in the process.

I have heard some talk about your new CD. When is it expected to drop?

It's hard to say! I am very dedicated to making every "Annihilating Rhythm" mix into a masterpiece. Each of the first three discs has told a story, and I've been dedicated to providing the same level of quality with Volume 4 of the series. We've already started to promote the mix to raise awareness that it will be dropping soon. However, it looks like the release date will be sometime in June and it can be downloaded through my Facebook fan page for free at facebook.com/thedj2rip.

You're playing the closing slot at Psychedelic Dreamscape next week in DC. You always seem to close out these shows. What can you tell me about the significance behind playing the closing slot at these parties?

The first Dreamscape party back in 2010 was a ground-breaking event for DC rave promoters. At the time, most parties were lucky to have 200 people show up, unless you were Steez Promo or Club Glow. Dreamscape sold out at the warehouse it was hosted at, with over 500 people, which was phenomenal considering it was a lineup of only local artists. Now it's looking like we'll have close to 4,000 people come out to this one. So I offered to play the closing set at that party, because I wanted to give all the other artists on the bill a chance to be in the limelight, and figured that people would start to leave the party during the closing set. What we found was the opposite: everyone was hyped and ready for me to play. The crowd was full of energy and no one wanted to stop dancing. It was like a 90's rave! So it's just become a tradition to play a very emotional closing set at all of the B.A.D.ASS Raves Psychedelic parties. It's a ritual!

Optiv and BTK To Drop Dirty Tricks LP

http://www.kmag.co.uk/editorial/news/optiv-and-btk-to-drop-dirty-tricks-lp-on-virus.html - SOURCE

Hard to believe it's only been a year since Optiv and BTK shacked up in the studio and began unleashing an unholy number of dirty tech-driven killers on imprints like Dispatch, Renegade Hardware, Demand, Frequency, Dutty Audio, and Virus Recordings.

While each has earned his keep in his own right, there's definitely something special cooking in the lab when these two get together as the pair have quickly gone on to not only take the scene by storm, but have entered some unholy zone of inspiration leading to the imminent release of their most ambitious project to date.

Yes, we're talking about Optiv & BTK's Dirty Tricks LP due on Virus that already has all the heavy-hitters and punters alike drooling in anticipation. If any of the snippets label boss Optical dropped on us are any clue as to the full nature of the project, bassheads be forewarned.

With an overwhelming number of requests for promos, only a select few DJs have been dropping the beats on the masses in anticipation of the heavy beats to come so be sure to mark your calendars for June 11th as the album officially drops as a 13-track download, 2x12" vinyl or 11-track CD.

Matrix & Futurebound Explode - DJ List feature

There are only a few names in the theater of drum'n'bass that can pique the interest of an EDM fan upon mention. Most of these names are celebrated around the world and are associated with influencing the sound, culture, and direction of the entire genre of d'n'b. The names Matrix & Futurebound (MATRIX & FUTUREBOUND) are indubitably ensconced in that elite group of d'n'b figureheads, influencing the entire genre of drum'n'bass for well over a decade. With an impressive oeuvre dating back to 2005, the duo's tunes have appeared on mixes from the scene's most revered DJs like Andy C, DJ SS, and DJ Hype to name a few. Now, MATRIX & FUTUREBOUND are preparing to release their newest electrifying EP All I Know (official video below) on 3Beat Records via Metro/Viper. The EP includes a bevy of stellar remixes, all of which feature the magnetic vocal talents of Leicester's Luke Bingham.

With timeless classics including Blind Cobblers Thumb and Mute '98, MATRIX & FUTUREBOUND have written songs that have elevated the d'n'b genre to new heights. Consequently, MATRIX & FUTUREBOUND's latest single arrives with much expectation, and these two d'n'b bosses have delivered in spades. All I Know is writhing with energy, creativity, and swagger. Fans will also be delighted to know that it's the first track from their forthcoming LP.

As expected, every mix on the EP hits the mark. The 'Rolling Out' mix of All I Know is a pressurized slammer, easing in with an arpeggiated synth and a filtered chord progression, soon delivering a frenetic bass explosion when the song crescendos into a full sprawl. Luke Bingham's slick vocals glide effortlessly on top of the hectic percussion and accompanied melodies, slicing through the relentless eruptions of synthetic bliss. Jump to the 'Smash & Grab' edit for the drumstep rework that cuts in and out of a half-time drum sequence with a cajoling, pitch-modulated synth lead. M&F have indisputably mastered the ability to switch gears from drum'n'bass to drumstep. The next track is the Seven Lions dubstep remix, filled with formant groans around a complextro arrangement. The track has been mangled into a flattering concert of wobbles, chord stabs, and shimmering glitchy effects. Truly a momentous EP from a momentous group of producers!
